Dealing with Emergencies

Before leaving for work I want to start this thread, since I haven't noticed another one on the same topic.

What provisions do you have for your beardies in case of an emergency? I have a wood stove for a backup heating source, but what if, for some reason, you couldn't get to a store to buy salad veggies for a month or more? Ideas?

I raise my own Dubia, and have planted a celery stalk (just bc I wanted to see if sitting the left over bottom in water rlly would start growing, it did), I plan on planting some turnip greens here soon, they seem to be easy to grow. Im sure there are other greens I could grow too :) Im just getting started, but I dont see any sense in buying from a store and not knowing what was used on the veggies when I can grow my own organic ones for free... Like this post, tho I would of titled it How to take care of ur beardies during Zombie Apocalypse :laughhard: srry Im a zombie fan!

LOL, me too! :D

Some people have a supply of those dry bearded dragon pellets as well; it's probably good to have something non-perishable on hand I'm thinking. (I'm not sure if my beardies would eat them right away but they probably would if they got hungry enough, or if I made them into a sort of slurry). :study: A few gallons of water wouldn't hurt either :)

There's a similar thread here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=174973

Fortunately where I live we don't have to worry about extreme natural disasters, occasionally we have storms that take out the power lines for a few hours, but that's about it. I do have a thriving vegetable garden and 2 greenhouses, one which I heat over the winter...I grow salads for me in a trough in there over winter, and I was thinking about putting in some for the beardies too this year, though the greens i have growing outside will probably last through until december, and if we get a good harvest of squash and don't eat them all, i'll have some of them stored in the garage. I also have loads of frozen veggies. I don't have much in the way of protein, though i guess if it got really desparate and my dubias haven't started making babies yet, I could feed them boiled eggs (i have chickens, so always have eggs on hand), or maybe even cut up bits of a mouse to feed them, cos there's always mice in the freezer.

Oh, and on growing stuff, turnips are easy (unless you have horribly heavy soil) but do take a reasonably long time to mature, so if you wanted to eat the turnips rather than just feed the tops, you'd need to wait several months...though if you just wanted the tops and were gonna chuck the roots, they are faster, and they'll make more leaves as you pick them, which is awesome. Collards grow pretty fast too, and certainly seemed to carry on making more leaves as we picked them (this year was the first time I've grown them, they aren't at all common over here), and radish grow amazingly fast. I'm not sure how nutritious radish tops are, but they are in the same family as turnips, and beardies seem to enjoy them, and they only take a few weeks to be ready.

I have no intention of eating the turnips, lol. I just want the greens, not that Im going to personally eat them, but here in alabama its pretty common for ppl to grow and eat them (just the greens) I may do the collards too. Im a horrible gardener tho :( I have a black thumb. But Im def gonna try

I like turnips when they're boiled, then buttered and peppered, but the pine trees here are so thick that the only way to grow anything is in containers. I don't know if containers would provide enough turnip greens to feed a bearded dragon, and they wouldn't be producing leaves during the winter. What do you think? Keeping pellets on hand sounds like a good idea. When they get near the expiration date, they can be replaced and the old ones can be fed to the dubias. Beardies might not like the pellets, but that would see them through in an emergency, especially if something happened during the winter.

I don't know about zombie apocalypses, but I'd feel better knowing that my animals and I have enough to get by for a while if some sort of disaster were to happen.

Hi, I hope everything ends up fine and it just passes you over no problem, or decides to turn the other way. Besides you normal food (Id make sure you have enough crix or whatever your feeding to last a few days) Id go get some of those hot hands heating packs, if you cant find any of the uniheat ones in such a short time, that way you know ull have heat for ur beardie. Cause he/she needs the heat to be able to digest. If you cant provide the heat then dont feed him/her. Id also grab some chicken and some squash baby food and get a syringe from a pharmacy (the ones they dose infants with) incase it comes down to your out of other feeders or anything like that, as storms have a mind of their own and theres no telling what damage may be caused and when the next time ull be able to get to a store is. And a gallon of water. I cant rlly think of anything else...Anyone else have any good suggestions???

If you have to evacuate, you'll need to take the beardie with you. I'd suggest having a 10 gallon tank or a large plastic kritter keeper to use if you are unable to take or move the cage.

Yes, Hurricane Sandy is barreling down onto NJ as we speak and the eye is supposed to land about an hour south of me and where i live we'll be getting the brunt of the storm surge. Power will most deffinately be out for at least 2 days (hurricane irene knocked us out for a week but i think the power companies were a bit unprepared). I don't even know where I'd find heat packs, much less now a day before the storm.

I have enough food but heat is an issue now .

walmart type stores carry them, and stores that carry hunting supplies should, like if your by a bass pro shop or anything like that... IDK If they would still have them, but ppl are probably buying out the bread and water and not thinking about heat pads. If you have a fire place or a wood stove or someway to heat it, you could fill a pillowcase or something with rice or dry beans, they retain heat rlly well, only thing is youll have to keep heating it.

Eek,I thought I was the only one getting Hurricane Sandy too. I was going to post something about what to have on hand, but I'm glad this was started. Though the storm won't be hitting anywhere close to me,I still stocked up on heating pads, crickets and supers from my work. Other than that, everyone else in my house will be fine without anything :) Hope everything turns out okay for anyone whose getting the storm head on :/

If i cant get hand warmers, how long can dragons go without food? Baby food isn't an option.

If i manage to get hand warmers, where do you put them, on their backs?

Well I'm no expert but what I do is wrap her in a shirt then put heating pads so it warms her on both sides like I said I'm not an expert but I am curious as to what other people think and what they would do in these circumstances!! I am so :( worried about my baby and this storm and its falling on a week were I'm not prepared and I'm pretty broke!!:-( my father is going to pick up the hand warmers for her but he lives 4towns away and with the storm coming were not to sure if he is going to be able to drive during the hurricane to get them to me! I'm hoping and praying that we dont lose electricity and I am able to go to work and there is just heavy rainn!! :banghead:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
