Dead waxworms

Hey guys! Today I ran to Petsmart and I didn't know much about waxworms, and they were all black. I asked the associate (taking a chance, I guess) if they were alive and they said yes, so I just assumed they were weird. Looking it up on the internet now, I know they're dead. Is this going to matter? Can I still feed them? It'd be nice to be able to since they were $4.59 for 25 of them and that's ridiculous. I was just looking for a fattier worm for Itchy to fill out a bit more.

Anyone?

No, I would definitely NOT feed them as something caused them to die and you don't want to take any chances that something was wrong with them. I would either call the pet store and take them back & ask for another container. Be sure to look at the other container to make sure they are not black, they should be beige in color and wiggling around in the container. That is a high price $4.59 for 25 of them so you should certainly get a replacement.

That's a good point. He's already had 2 or 3 as my boyfriend fed them, but I'll keep an eye on him and see how he is for the next few days. But it is Petsmart, and my Petsmart is notoriously bad for dead things (crickets, fish, etc).

I would NOT feed him any more of them, it could make your beardie very sick or worse! It's not worth the risk. What other feeders do you have on hand to feed him?

I bought a container of 50 wax worms from Pet Smart and they were $3.99 and I thought that was expensive.

I know... I just said I would watch him for the next few days. He has crickets and supers so he's fine but thanks for your concern.

Just an update, I think I was wrong about them being dead. I didn't throw them out because I wasn't entirely sure if they were dead or just in a pupal state. I'm pretty sure they were in a pupal state because suddenly, I'm peering in to check on them and there are live ones in there!

On another note, Itchy loves them live!

When they are in the pupae stage, they aren't black though, they get firmer and not as soft as they were before going through that stage. If you see any black ones though, please don't feed them as those are the dead or almost dead ones.

I'm not feeding the black ones. I was feeding the live ones. Don't worry, I'm being cautious enough that I wouldn't feed anything myself if I knew it was unsafe. The only reason he got the first few "dead" ones is because someone else fed them to him before I had a chance to warn him. He's had a few very much alive ones. I'm just keeping the rest to observe because I know there were none moving the day I got them and after that they were. So clearly SOME of them must have been in the pupal stage.

They're not exactly black either (not all of them anyway), they're a more brown-y colour.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
