Dark Beardie under basking light

HI
Ok so my Beardie is about 4 -5 months old, little over 10 inches long lol little fat. He is in a 55 gallon tank with reptisun 10 tube uvb and a 90 watt regular lite bulb for basking, he eats about 35 crickets a days and greens and veggies. calcium and d3 powder dusted on his crickets 3 times a week, and slight dusting on his greens every so often. there is about 6 in between his basking spot and his light. my question is- How can i tell if hes is getting enough heat? he turns so dark almost black all over when hes under is lamp,(is this normal) alot of the time he does the gaping mouth to regulate temp. when i take him out he brightens up, he is almost always basking when hes not looking for food, he eats very very well and poops every day, white urate but poop is kinda green and a little wet looking but pretty solid, lol he poops huge, eyes are bright and hes very alert. so is he ok should i be using a 100 watt bulb instead of the 90? i just want him to be happy, at nite he waits for me to tuck him in lol he sleeps wrapped up in a fleece blanket in a hammock until i wake him in the morning with his lights. :blob8:

thanks hi, i just gave hims his usual bath and i softly ran a soft tooth brush over that spot and it came right off so i guess it was cricket guts or something but its gone, so the only thing im worried about is the dark color when basking and green poo. How can i tell if hes is getting enough heat? he turns so dark almost black all over when hes under is lamp,(is this normal) alot of the time he does the gaping mouth to regulate temp. when i take him out he brightens up, he is almost always basking when hes not looking for food, he eats very very well and poops every day, white urate but poop is kinda green and a little wet looking but pretty solid, lol he poops huge, eyes are bright and hes very alert. so is he ok should i be using a 100 watt bulb instead of the 90? i just want him to be happy, at nite he waits for me to tuck him in lol he sleeps wrapped up in a fleece blanket in a hammock until i wake him in the morning with his lights.

here a super cute pic when he was smaller in his bed, he now has a homemade hammock he sleeps in with his blanket and he loves it. he likes to cuddle

bumping this for you!! Im curious too. My 4 month old beardie will sometimes get darker on his head while under the basking light. If I take him out and especially bathe him he lightens up anmd is such pretty color. He eats pretty well, loves dandy lions, collard, mustard greens, escarole. Eats mostly phoenix worms, a butterworm once a week or two, a few waxworms here and there, mini super worms (letting up on those). Ordered some small dubai roaches but haven't gotten them yet. He does eat crickets but not daily. He gets bathed every other day. Right now he is sleeping half covered by part of a t-shirt of mine. He loves it!! I have a Reptisun 10.0 uvb bulb and a 75 watt basking lamp. Is this ok I wonder?

Easiest way to tell is to get a digital thermometer with the probe...can usually find them at Walmart for like 10 bucks. Place the probe on the spot where he basks and make sure you leave it there for at least an hour to get an accurate temp...the main unit can go on the opposite side of the tank and give yo the cool side reading. Basking side should read 100-110 degrees. Knowing your temps is very important so they can properly digest food and also not overheat/dehydrate. I wouldn't go to a higher watt bulb until you know your temps. The digital thermometer is what your looking for though...those stick on or dial ones can be way off!

He's soo adorable! :love5:
Sometimes when beardies get darker colored it means they're trying to soak up more heat. But the only way to know for sure his temps are high enough is to use a thermometer. A temp gun or a digital thermometer w/ probe is best, because the dials and stick-on ones can be off by as much as 20*F!
Bearded dragons of all ages need their basking surface temp to be at least 95*F to be able to digest their food, but three-digit temps are better. Adults prefer it 100-105*F, and babies like it a little higher, about 105-110* :)

Edit: ikkie beat me to it! ;)

Hello,

The Reptisun 10 tube bulb is fine, how far away is it from him?
The basking bulb should be good, is it a regular light or a neodymium coated type of light?
As long as the basking temperatures are in a range of 95-110 with a cooler end of 78-82 that should be fine.
Are you using a digital probe or a temp gun to measure the temperatures?
His stool is a little greenish? Have you gotten a fecal done on him?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
