Today I was walking around Petco and looking at the reptiles. I "happened" to overhear a lady talking to an employee about bearded dragons. The employee was showing her the kits that go for 190, and telling her it had everything except for the bowls and the sand she needed. Then she showed her the dragons which wer 60. All in all she told her she needed to spend close to 300 on a bunch of crap. The lady said she was going to call her husband and the employee walked away. This was when I stepped in. I approached the lady and told her that I have been keeping them for a while and told her that all that stuff was really expensive and that petco employees have no idea what they are doing and her dragon would die if she kept it like they were telling her to. I referred her to this site and she seemed very appreciative. She then told me it was going to be for her 8 year old sons birthday and asked me if he could handle it and if they are good pets. I told her he could if she helped him and that they are great pets. I think she is going to learn how to properly care for it and get it from a breeder :D . I cost petco about 300 8)

It really irritates me about the crap being sold and the uneducated pet store emplyoyees. Good for you! 8)

Good going! I hope she trusts your word over Petco's.

For what it's worth, I got thrown out of a pet store once for telling a woman that a peke-a-pom is not a new breed, and if she wanted a cute mix to go to the pound instead. Pet stores get really cranky when you tell their customers the truth and it costs them money.

I hope you succeeded!

It pisses me off Bout pet stores. They need employees that train and specialize in certain animalS/animal products.

I was worried about getting kicked out of that store. The employee was rough looking to. She looked like a witch. That is why I waited till we were alone back their to start talking to her. I think she definitely will take my word because she walked out of the store telling her husband what I told her and she put beardeddragon.org in her phone. :D

Nice job! I love helping people, and how it makes the pet stores mad. I wonder if any pet store actually knows what they are talking about =.=

I am very knowledgeable when it comes to reptiles, cats, and small animals. I work at Petco. They jumped at the opportunity to hire me. I am in charge of our reptiles and small animals. I have all reptiles that would normally be put on sand in most pet stores on carpet, that I make sure gets cleaned daily. I change their water daily and I give them crickets, even though they want us to give mealworms. I refuse, so crickets it is! Were not all unknowledgeable losers.

Good for you, we are not say all the employees are bad but a lot of them do need more training, we need more like you in these stores!!! :blob5: :blob8:

While I completely agree with what was said above..I also have to point out that information should come both ways..As a pet care employee at a Petsmart,of in which takes great care of every little critter,I have seen plenty of different people come into my store wanting everything from a beardie to a betta fish and everything in between...And while I have no problem telling them how to take care of whatever it is they would like to have as a pet,I cannot tell them every little thing that goes into taking the absolute best care of it..I fully believe that it is the new owner's responsibility to go and take the time to research that certain pet to know what it is they are getting into..like I myself have done with each of my animals that I own..Not just for the animals' sake for the best care,but for them so they know the life span average,costs,time etc. It frustrates me to have someone come up to me and ask what an animal is,then decide right then and there that they want one,not fully realizing that this animal will depend on them for the remainder of it's life..I have countless stories of times where I have refused to sell a particular animal to someone because of the fact that they have no knowledge or information about it.
I do agree though,that there are plenty of uninformed employees who could careless about where the animals go..But at the same time,the potential new owner should invest in researching! Just my take :blob8:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
