Ive spent the last few hours trolling the boards, and ive read a lot about people taking their beardies to various places, outside, and letting them roam around their houses. That's something I'd be interested in doing with my future beardie but I have an issue.
A few years ago, my fiancee and I have had a few outbreaks of mites with our reptiles. What we believed happened was the live mice and/or rats we purchased from a local pet store had mites. And we also lost a few younger snakes due to them. We used a few different methods in combination to battle and conquer the mites and (knock on wood) we've not had a single outbreak since. We've also since switched to frozen rodents, as well as moved to a new house. With that being said, he's been a little (ok, ALOT) paranoid of mites. There is no letting any reptile touch any surface of the house, other than their tank, or our body.
I purchased a ferret for my daughter back in September, and you would have thought the world was going to END(well, I guess it was supposed to a few months later, but here we are.) I wont even get into the precautions we have to take to make sure the ferret doesn't give mites to the reptiles (shes albino...and doesn't have a black speck on her, but that doesn't matter to him, we still must take these precautions...SMH)
Anyways... Like I said, I'd like to let my future beardie roam my house (via a harness and leash), snuggle with me on the couch, or go with me to some places. Honestly, how likely is it for the beardie to get mites from just "hanging out" with me?? Letting it bask in the sun by letting it lay in the grass in my back yard isnt something i'd really want to do because I live on a creek, with a lot of wildlife around. Deer, skunks, squirrels, chipmunks, field mice, and so on. I know the possibility of parasites is greatly increased if i let it walk around in the grass. But my house is mite free, so i know letting it chill on the couch or bed, or roam around my place(via harness/leash) isnt going to be the end of the world, in my eyes at least. I guess I am just looking for some kind of "ammunition" to use when hes in an uproar over my decisions !!
Thanks guys!!
