I have been using a Coffee grinder to crush my dog food for the dubia roaches.. But, with the small amount you can do at a time it's time consuming. So I was thinking on using a blender. Does anybody else use this methed? some people have told me you don't need to grind the dog food. What are your guys thoughts?

I have tested both crushed and whole and they eat both, crushed just seems to disappear faster with the larger crumbs last to go. I'm not sure about a blender but I use a food processor and it does the trick.

I've never bothered to crush the cat/dog food I use and my roaches seem happy enough to me!

get one of those old time flour mills, the ones that look sorta like butter churns..ought to grind up dog food by the bucket.

Do you use dog food? It looks like I may not have to grind it.. yay :blob5:
Yes I use a dog food and a mixture of high protein cereals and grains. For instance scottish oats are higher in protein that regular oats so I use the scottish. If you have a store near you with a bulk food section that's a great place to get feeder food and bran for supers substrate. The bins usually post the nutritional values....just look for grains high in protein. If there's a Winco in your area check it out you can get feed for pennys a pound. Roaches require a very high protein diet you can also get protein powder and add it to your chow mixture. I don't anylonger crush the dog food as they will eat it regardless of if you do or not. It's one corner you can cut to save time that won't make any difference.

YES I have an old milk shake blender and I did a whole bag of dog food in15 minuets. I have tested both ways whole dog food and ground up and I had less deaths and more healthier roaches. I currently have 1 bin of adult dubias 1 bin of baby dubias 1 bin of lobsters and 1 bin of baby lobsters. If you would like more info just let me know.

I crush my roach chow with a blender, seems to work best for me. Ground food allows the roaches to consume it easier, thus grow quicker. I found personally, ground over whole works better as I end up with more plump roaches. I think because they don't have to work so hard to eat. The way a roaches mouth parts are created makes it easier to eat very small sized food bits opposed to larger. Example, the roaches will consume a grated carrot much easier and quicker than a whole carrot. Just my opinion and observation.

I would put the whole cat food in and they seemed to eat it. I just started using Chick Laying Mash, it's like $13 for a 50lb. bag. They seem to like eating this way more. I think because it is very finely ground and tons of protein. Way better than grinding or bleending for an hour.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
