Cricket shortage?

Does anyone know about a cricket shortage going on due to disease or something? I've heard some comments here and there and noticed a change in one of the web sites I normally order from (they no longer have their 800# showing and I can't reach anyone!). Roaches just are not an option for me right now unfortunately. Any incite would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I have heard a bit about it, but haven't seen any effects of it. Even at the reptile show this weekend there were plenty of vendors selling thousands and thousands of crickets!

I live just outside the Toronto area in Canada and a local pet store just told me that there is a problem with their supplier. The supplier apparantly raised the prices from $29/1000 to $45/1000!!! I am totally stuck. I am going to try another place in Oshawa this week and hopefully they are taking advantage of the apparent situation. I wish they had more details to backup the story though. That was a huge shock.

I'd try Ghann's. I know they had something posted on their site about the shortage, but they sent me 1000 Friday (when I emailed them about my 1st order having some missing due to a dented box).

I understand about the roaches not being an option as well. I can't bring myself around to getting them and hubby has even said NO!

i heard about it as well here in Cali.

But my large chain stores were ok, pet smart.. but not the smaller stores...

I just got an order from Ghann's this week. By far, this is my favorite place to order from. A few hundred got out of the box, because they were small crickets, and Ghann's is sending me 1,000 extra crickets with my next order!!!

I in Oshawa Ontario (Canada), and I went back to the store at the opposite end of town because they were charging $35. I was going to go with the store in the North end 5 minutes from me but they had that sudden price increase. $45 is just too rich for my blood for a convenience. I will take the 15 minute drive and save $10. If anyone knows where a cheaper supplier is that serves Canada please let me know.

Why is there a shortage I am getting vague stories about a disease. I am starting to wonder if it is an excuse to raise prices. I find it fishy that the stores don't know or aren't willing to say what the real problem is.

I want to start a roach farm or whatever you call it but hubby won't have anything to do with it. I've got the black rubbermaid tub and hoping he'll cave. ha! ha!

hmm new to owning a BD and having to buy crickets and here in my area (SF bay) local pet stores/pet food supplies have crickets for 8-10c each and when i buy them they give me more than i asked for anyways. i have however noticed a high mortality rate in them even though i feed them and give them water.

regardless though dealing with crickets is a bit annoying and i read that phoenix worms are more healthy for BD's and my adult BD that i adopted recently like to eat meal worms (bad i know blame the previous owner) so i ordered up some phoenix worms for him and as soon as i get them they are going to be his staple diet along with collared greens etc.

i also have an iguana so the vegetable stuff is easy for me as from what i have read they both benefit from the same exact vegetables
