Cricket Larvae

im not sure if it was a cricket larvae or not but when i put crickets in a seperate container with my beardie for his feeding, i noticed a small grey larvae like 'thing'. I was about to take a picture and ask if it was bad for him to eat it but the little devil ran over and gobbled him up, leaving me with a picture of him lol. So is it something to worry about?

Crickets don't develop from larvae. When they hatch from eggs, they are mini-adults. If it was indeed a worm-like insect, you may have had an intruder on your hands. I'm sure your dragon will be ok. Not sure what it was, though. Have you looked up different fly larvae? Seems to me that there would be more than one if an insect had somehow laid eggs in the crix container. Maybe it came from the supplier- they may have an infestation of some type. Maybe you should call them and ask.

Yes, it was likely a maggot of some sort. I didn't notice where you were from (if it said) and you didn't say where the crix came from - but, it's getting warm across much of the country over the past few weeks and the flies will def. thrive from that.

I wouldn't worry about it, but I would watch the last of those crix carefully.

im in massachusetts and its getting pretty warm now, also i got the crickets from flukers

It was a Dermestis beetle larvae, most likely. Harmless to your dragon. Dermestis beetles eat just about anything that is animal matter.They are eating the shed exoskelatons of the crickets and the dead one's too. They will also eat feathers, hides, leather, horn and on and on.

Yeah I get at least one in every shipment of crickets I get. They are basically "cleaning" bugs. Harmless, but not recommended to feed them. I just toss 'em out back :wink:
