Creating a rockwall without using styrofoam?

I need a way to build a rock wall/basking/climbing structure that starts on one side and ends at the other side (maybe even the ceiling). This will be permanent, non movable and completely cleanable. I dont see using styrofoam a reliable option since its so fragile and light, so anyone have any suggestions on what type of materials I can use. Maybe using some styrofoam is non-avoidable but maybe I could place some wire mesh over it to make it more sturdy, since painting over mesh wouldlt look very good, what kind of material can I mold around it? some kind of molding clay?. Any and all kinds of tips will be appreciated. Thanks!

The trick with the styrofoam is that you coat it with grout to give it strength. I would think that a clay backdrop would be very heavy, but I don't have much experience with clay.

I have been working quite a bit with the styrofoam and grout combo and they are very sturdy. Particularly if you use the high density insulating foam. You could glue and even screw them together. I having been using tooth picks for small pieces as well as NoMoreNails and Shishkebob skewers for larger ones with the glue. If you must use mesh then go ahead. A few layers of grout and it will not be noticeable anyways. One word of advice with the insulating foam, I found it takes the grout a lot better if you scratch up the surface. I did it with a serrated kitchen knife.

if you arent comfortable with styrofoam, there is the foam that is used to insulate refridgerated areas. You can pick it up wonderfully cheap at your local home depot or lowes, and simply paint it. It is the pink stuff. the granuales are smaller, so defiantely paint it over with a few coats of whatever is recommended safe for the bearded. Good option as this stuff is very strong. I have used it to insulate while brewing beer.
