Its a case of playing around with bulbs until you get the right temp i.e. 110 basking spot (for babies)- best to measure it with digital thermometer with probe and lower/raise until you get correct temp- my basking bulb is about 6-7 inches from basking spot. As for using a higher wattage bulb in lower watt fixture, it could blow the bulb and its a fire hazzard- you'll need to get a higher wattage fixture
