Hi everyone, this is my first post on the site although i have been coming here for months to get my information, I wanted a most specific answer to my question this time.

I'll give a little background on my little girl Connie before i get to my question.

We got Connie when she was 2 months old back at the beginning of may 2015,as expected she was not wanting to eat very much, the first day she had about 10 crickets and that was it for days. She would maybe eat a cricket or 2 a days and then perhaps go 2 or 3 days without eating. I got roaches and hoppers then because i heard they are some of the best feeders out there and that beardies love them, It wasn't a success at first but she was at least having a couple every day.

Our feeding problems where fixed one weekend when i had to put her in boarding with the local reptile shop, when she came back she was a full time chomper, eating anything and everything (except greens :x ) Since then i thought a good staple diet would be roaches and cali worms with the occasional waxworm as a treat when i took her out to play. She goes through 50 0.5-1" roaches in 5-6 days, Digestion does not seem to be a problem as she poos every day in the exact same spot by the front of the viv (except the past 2 days when she has started to shed for the first time with me) she had a mushy poo which i put down to shedding and not parasites from what i have read.

So I will get onto my question now, which is regarding beardies becoming picky eaters especially when they have a staple of roaches. It costs me £10+ to buy 50 roaches so we are talking about £70 for the roaches alone in a month. So i decided my last purchase would be 25 roaches and 50 hoppers in the hope of reducing her feeding bill by a few quid a month, but the little rascal won't eat the hoppers for me now. :banghead:
She had 1 yesterday but refuses to eat them now yet she snapped a roach out of my hand so she is defiantly hungry.

Has anyone got some advice for getting her to have both of these in her diet? she is almost 6 months so would that be too young to leave her a few days without food while only trying her with hoppers? Keep in mind she is starting to shed now.

The shedding could be affecting her appetite, I see that happen quite a bit and it's temporary. They can also become picky eaters given the chance. I would keep offering the hoppers. She'll dig into them when she gets hungry enough. Since she likes the roaches so much, have you considered starting a colony? They take a few months to establish but once they're up and running, they're easy to take care of and are self sustaining - much cheaper than buying them in batches every week.

I left 3 hoppers in with her for the day yesterday, still giving her roaches at meal times but i reduced the amount she was having. There was only 1 hopper in there at bedtime so i assume she ate 2 at some stage. She just won't eat them when offered to her yet, so i guess i'll just keep putting a couple in each day and hope that works.

I have thought about setting up my own colony but atm it is not an option.

Just an update.

She is eating the locusts but not when i put them straight in there. I have to put them in a leave them there. She will usually eat them by the end of the day. This is a bit of a pain as she obviously isn't eating as much as she should be and i hate that i have to leave them in there all day because they could be stressing her out.

I did spend a day just offering them to her but she will not eat a hopper if i offer it to her, if it's a roach she will snap it from me faster then anything.

I know it's not the best idea to be leaving live food in there with her and would think especially so when she is shedding but i don't know what else to do, right now i cannot afford to feed her solely on roaches. Anyone got any other suggestions?

I would invest in a colony. Buy a bunch of feeders and maybe 10 adult females and 3 males. House the feeders and adults seperately and go from there.

I would love to be able to start up a colony but it's not an option right now. I don't really want to have a colony of roaches in the house with 2 curious kids running around.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
