Concerning: Feeding a Baby Bearded Dragon

Hi, I have a baby bearded dragon (eight weeks and almost two days old), and I was just curious as to how much he should be eating. I understand that there are a lot of questions like this, but I would just like to know more specifics in my bearded dragon's case. I got him about three weeks ago, and since then, he's only shed once. He's about eight inches in length (including his tail), and he looks relatively healthy to me.

However, I constantly worry about his feeding, considering I've heard such a variation in what to feed baby bearded dragons. He eats relatively little greens (I offer him collard greens every day, and offer them to him prior to his live meal feedings), which is expected, and isn't too much of my concern (he didn't eat any at all the first few days I had him, but he's starting to eat them quite excitedly now). I also feed him small crickets, smaller than the space between his eyes. The family friend who I got the bearded dragon from (who has bearded dragons of her own, and a LOT of experience with reptiles in general) recommended 15 or so crickets a day. Others have told me I need to feed them MUCH more (with responses ranging from "as many as they'll eat in one sitting, two to three times a day," to "as many as they'll eat in 5-10 (or some say 10-15) minutes, two to three times a day," and eating anywhere from 20 to 60 (I've heard some even say anywhere from 30 to 100) crickets per day.

As of now, I am currently feeding him twice a day, anywhere from 20-25 crickets per session. The problem is that I'm terribly afraid of overfeeding him (as explained below), but am also worried that he isn't getting enough food to grow up properly. He eats quite ravenously, and usually goes through 20-25 of them within three or four minutes, and would probably eat more if I gave him more.

One of my biggest fears is overfeeding him, though, as I heard that overfeeding them when they're young can have a significant impact on their growth, particularly in the case of their nerves. I read somewhere that overfeeding a bearded dragon can lead to unwanted pressure on certain leg nerves, causing the back legs to become paralyzed, as well as other overweight issues. But from many, I've heard that when they're babies, they need to be fed enough so that they can grow up properly, some saying that they will shed weekly, some growing almost a full inch per week!

Sorry about the long text, but I really have been wondering for a while now what's best for him. He appears to be quite healthy and happy, but I keep telling myself that I can't be too sure about that. So I guess my question would be how much should he be eating? Should I just feed him until he stops eating, two to three times a day? Or should I follow some kind of time limit or set quantity? I understand that there really isn't just one correct answer, but it'd help to know other opinions and suggestions from those with more experience.

Some details, in case anyone was wondering: I'm assuming he's male, though I can't tell for sure yet. His name is "Kaiser," which is German for "emperor." He's a little emperor for now. He's alert, has light coloration, quite active (especially when I let him out of his terrarium to explore), defecates once or twice a day (no undigested material, white urates), has proper temperatures (75-80 degrees Fahrenheit on the cool side, 100 degrees on the warm side), has a ceramic basking light, a tube, Reptisun 10.0 UVB light, and an additional light for ambiance and warmth. I dust his crickets daily with calcium supplements with D3 each feeding session, and two days a week (one feeding on these days) with vitamins with beta carotene instead of vitamin A. Any suggestions on dusting with calcium powder and vitamin powder would be appreciated as well. Too often or too little with the vitamins?

Honestly these little guys will eat. I personally have 4 young dragons, my oldest is approximately 4 months or so. All for of mine are fed 2 times a day on mon-thur, as I am at work. Fri-sun they are fed 3 times a day. Each feeding is how ever many crickets they can eat within 10-15 minutes. Everyone told me 15 minutes so at first I was feeding them for 15 minutes and found there to be an excess of crickets left over as some times they would get full before the 15 minute mark. For every rule there are exceptions, that being said some days one dragon might not want to eat as much and will stop after 5 minutes on a particular feeding. Other day that same one may want to eat past the 15 minute mark. This is what is important, do not feed live feeders past 15 minutes, as then they may gourd themselves. Which can cause a risk of back leg or lower extremity paralyzation. Keep in mind though the small crickets do not often cause this particular health risk, the risk lies more so with feeding feeders which are to large for that individual dragon.

A dusting schedule for your dragon would be to dust one feeding a day with calcium 5 days a week and the other 2 days a week with multivitamin.

ok on same page with beardednoob, and share your same worries :)

you have a cute baby...:)

I feed the smaller crickets (3/8") to Joge aka Jogia aka Freckles aka Fat butt (he is a she we think and i swear the dragon has had four names in four mos LOL) - she eats 2X a day 40-50 crickets at a time, with a handful of phoenix worms thrown in, nibbling on the greens to amuse us mostly, though I notice over time she gradually eats a little more...she's 5 mos old. Feeding the smaller food lessens my worry of impaction, and there are times where she appears to want to eat more and other times when she seems satisfied. I also monitor pooping very closely and ensure we get a present every day to make sure things are moving along and to check on how much she's digesting properly, which makes me check the heat constantly to make sure the temps are high enough for her to digest her food well. And so the cycle of ingestion and outgestion (word?) goes on and on.

Thanks for the response, Beardednoob. I knew they ate a lot, but I've just been wondering what's considered a lot or a little. It's a bit difficult for me to gauge how much he'll eat in a time period, so I was kind of looking for actual number suggestions as to how many they will eat in a feeding. But I guess that varies depending on the time, situation, and bearded dragon. Sometimes Kaiser will chase the crickets (which ends up having him eat much more in a given time), and other times, he'll wait for them to come to him (which causes for a less crickets in a given time). So I guess I should try to get a general, average number as to how much he eats, and try to work with that, as well as a set time limit. He's eating anywhere from 30-40 crickets in ten minutes. Which I hope is alright?

As for the dusting schedule, thanks. I'll keep that in mind, as I have heard that suggestion a few times now, but just worry that he's not getting enough. But I figure an overdose of calcium and vitamins could be trouble too.

And thanks, BeardieGrandma! I absolutely adore him. And I appreciate your input as well. It's nice to hear about others' bearded dragons and their feeding schedule/amounts. And I quite enjoyed the little story there about the names and gender confusion (my bearded dragon's name is "Kaiser," which means "emperor" in German, so hopefully it is a guy, ha ha). :]

Any more input is appreciated, though for now, I think I have a pretty solid idea about how much to feed him. So thank you!

Over doing the calcium will result in calcification of the soft tissue, such as major blood vessels and even could affect the heart. So yeah, don't over do the calcium.

I would say in a feeding they generally eat about 25-30 small crickets.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
