Is compact flourecent lighting safe to use as extra lighting? Obie's Megaray heats her whole enclosure but doesnt light up the cool end of the tank so I put a CFL (coil style low wattage bulb) in that end. I was just wondering because they have always kinda messed with my eyes.

and it will do the same thing to your beardies. Get a regular bulb in there or a tube fluorescent.

That is interesting as I was under the impression the normal household coils/compacts was fine to use as extra light. Is their frequency different to tubes?

Well I hope it is, as I just got a baby Uromastyx and its little 2ft needs a bit more light and i was going to put a household compact in there as there is very little space left after the Reptisun 10 and Basking spot is in.

it is OK but not great, at least in my opinion. As the OP stated, they do tend to mess with his eyes and I think they would do the same with a dragons. I will say though that they will probably not cause the photokeratoconjunctivitis that compact UVB bulbs can/will cause.

GoFast, the bulbs we are talking about are household energy saver coils. Does the same issues that compact UVBs have also relate to the household coils ?
Janie.

Yes the household energy bulbs are the one i am referring to and no they don't have t he exact same problems as the coil UVB's but, they still do tend to strain your eyes a bit and after a while, I get a headache with them. But as I said before, I am pretty confident that they will NOT cause the photokeratoconjunctivitis that the coil UVBs seem to cause.

lol sorry to scare ya! I too had an energy saver compact in Elliotts old viv and noticed that he avoided one of his favorite spots when I put it in. So as an experiment, I put in a regular household again and he started going back to that spot again.
