Chicory

The beautifuldragons food list (http://www.beautifuldragons.com/Nutritionframeset.html) names chicory as one of the safe things to feed a beardie. I just wondered if they mean this (wat we in Belgium call "witloof"):

according to wikipedia, this vegetable is called chicory in the UK, but belgian endive in the US. It would be great if beardies could eat this, because we always have some at home because the guinea pigs love it...

..... I've never seen it in my supermarket's veg departments.

It's a very common vegetable in Belgium, though I hate it. It tastes very bitter.

I don't think that's the chicory they mean. This is what I think of when I hear chicory. It's a weedy plant in the dandelion family.

If the stuff you have is a type of endive, I'm sure it would be OK to feed occasionally.

Let it bloom so you can be sure its the right stuff. There are quite a few weeds that are similar.

That is a belgian endive in my neck of the woods. I've fed it to Scaley but she's not a huge fan.

Are the colour of the flowers dependent on the acidity of the soil with Chiroy ? I think the stuff I've seen in my "weed patch" has yellow flowers sometimes blue.

No, chicory will always have blue flowers. If its yellow, its something else. Possibly yellow hawksweed? Thats stuff is a nightmare here, I battle it every year and it hardly makes a dent.

I know a lot of people call endive chicory but since endive is listed separately on the nutrition list, it has to be something different. I wonder if you could email the author of the list to get clarification?
