CHE heating question

I live in central alabama so it doesnt get too very cold, but I wanted to get a CHE just incase, rather have one and avoid frozen babies. I was looking on eBay and all the wattages seem kinda high...I know nothing about CHE But it is starting to get chilly outside here now. Also is there a certain brand to get or would any work? theres a huge price jump on eBay, so just wondering... And how do the temperature switch things work, IDK what they are called, lol.. but the thing you plug the CHE into so that way it only comes on when it gets so cold. Can any of you hlp me with this, I did a search on CHE but what came up was ppl saying they had one..

I use a ZooMed 75w, on a thermostat.

I only use it if it gets cold. The thermostat kicks on the CHE if the temp gets below 70'ish. It will heat up to about 77, then turn off.

Thats neat, do you set the temp when u want it to come on or does it automatically do 70-77? Also whats it called? So would it matter the wattage of the CHE if I have it on a therostat?

You set the temp that you would like it to come on.

Many people use them to set a temp in which they'd like it to go off. Like if you put the probe on a basking surface, once it hits 110, the CHE or light turns off. I think they are better for low temps at night, or winter.

Thanks! I think I understand it now... You plug the che sockets plug into the thermometer part, then put the probe in the tank, and when the temp drops too low it will turn on the che will turn on? And the wattage of the che wouldnt matter then right? Srry so many questions, I just got new babies in today and Im in the process of builind a new viv (since I only have one small one) And I just wanna make sure I think of everything and get it right the 1st time

You got it. We have a LARGE viv....and a 75w keeps it warm enough at night. Ordered mine on amazon.

Im in the middle of building a 4x2x2 (in the middle of my kitchen, lol) hopefully the hubby will be ok with that when he gets home from work... Which seems way bigger than it sounds come to find out.. Is that about the size of urs? Cause then Ill just grab a 75w.

Ours is 5x2x2. We have part of it partitioned off with a bamboo mat, we call it the 'bedroom', that's where Draper sleeps, and where his CHE hangs. I'll see if I can find a good pic.
