Charlie is acting different and not in a good way. He went all yellow spotted lizard today! I have a cat that is always in my room where his terrarium is located. She completely leaves him alone. Today, she was sitting near his terrarium not even looking at him and he ran up to the wall and started hitting it with his hands. She turned around and he opened his mouth, puffed his beard, and it turned black (this is the first time I've actually seen it turn black or him puff it out this much). My cat was so scared it ran and hid behind me and began kitten whimpering (she's 9). I went over to see him if he kept doing the same thing to me and hissed! I don't want him to stay like this! I want to be able to safely interact with him again. What should I do?!
Background Info:
I've had him for about 4 1/2 months. When I first got him, (to be honest I'm not sure if Charlie is a he or she) he would let me pick him up, hold him, and he would fall asleep on me.
About a month after I got him, he got fussy about his food. He slowly stopped paying attention to his crickets even started running away from them. He started going to a shed and he was eating just about nothing. I tried Dubia roaches and Phoenix worms and they worked for a while and then he stopped eating again. I was forced to syringe feed him for about two weeks(during this time only weighing in at about 10g). I finally got him to eat again. I started with tiny Dubia roaches and finally got him back to small crickets.
Around this time, he got pretty feisty. He would open his mouth at me and act threatened. This was at the beginning of March. Slowly, he let me hold him for brief periods of time again. At the beginning of this month, he started to go into shed again. His appetite stayed but he got really aggressive. He would jump at my hand like he was going to bite it.
Housing Specifics:
40 gallon ZooMed terrarium with a split screen top.
Heating and Lighting:
Day- ReptiSun 10.0 UVB T8 bulb mounted on the inside and Repti Basking Spot Lamp (100w) housed in a dual dome on top of the screen. The basking area measures at 110° F. The cool side of the terrarium measures at 78° F. The lights are on a timer and remain on for 12 hours a day.
Night- 100w infrared spot bulb kept on for 12 hours by timer when the day lights are off.
Thermometers: I use one digital thermometer/hygrometer combo. I keep it on the warm side hung at the height of the basking spot. I use an infrared temperature gun to check my temperatures daily and as needed.
Humidity: I try to keep the terrarium around 35%.
Substrate: Reptile carpet. After cleaning, I put paper towel in so I can let reptile carpet dry fully before putting it back in.
Decor: (going from left to right) Flat stacking stones arranged in the back left corner. A ramp coming down from the back wall to the front. There is a bark arch hide at the bottom. There is a gnarled driftwood climb made of resin next to the ramp. The water dish is in the front right. The food dish goes in the back right. There is a background cling on the outside of the back terrarium wall. There is another hide in the back left and a fake plant in the corner.
