I went to the pet store yesterday to get some crickets and they were out of the small ones...won't be getting anymore until Wednesday...so I picked up their last can of small crickets. (our monitor lizard loves canned everything so I figured this would be a fine substitute...the monitor will also eat an entire can of food in one sitting so more on this in a bit.)
So yesterday morning I fixed up Pouncey's salad and put 12 small canned crickets on top and sprinkled with a little calcium and vitamin powder. He ate about 8 of the crickets and nibbled a bit at the turnip greens and squash.
This morning I emptied out everything that was left and refreshed again with about 12 crickets. I put the dish in his tank and he immediately went to it, ate 1 cricket then ran away to his hammock. I fed him 2 more of the crickets with tongs but then he didn't want anything to do with it.
When he "hunts" crickets he is really lazy and just sits there and waits for them to come to him...so he doesn't seem to like chasing his food or anything. Also, he has pooped every day since I had him until yesterday! I gave him a bath (93 degree water) and no poop. Still hasn't pooped. I am not sure if it is from the canned food or what. If he doesn't poop in the next few hours I'm going to try another bath. He is shedding too and the baths definitely seem to help with that.
Also, I am not sure how long the can keeps. Our monitor eats and entire can so we haven't had to worry about it with him but Pouncey obviously doesn't eat that much. I can't get live crickets until Wednesday so hopefully it will hold me over and hopefully if he gets hungry he will eat them?
My boyfriend is setting up some containers so we can buy crickets in bulk instead of this going to the pet store every other day. This is the second time in the past few months that they have ran out so they are totally unreliable.
