cage cleaning--what do you use

hi, i just took my beardie to the vet and told her that i cleaned with vinegar the cage, and soap with his bowls. she told me that vinegar cleans but does not kill the bacteria. she said she uses chlorhedine(????) to kill the bacteria. she siad she gets it at drug stores and dilutes it and you can spray all the equipmetn down with it and everything. i have a baby crawling on my floor so i need to be sure i am killing the bacteria but i dont want to hurt my beardie. what do you all clena your cage with and wehre do you get it?

You could try betadine diluted with water, 10:1. There are also organic cleaners available at most pet shops.

I have one of those Shark steamers that I can get into small places with.

Yes! We use Chlorhexidine too! It's also known as Nolvasan. It's what most vets use to disinfect surfaces and equipment. We also sell it on our website if your interested. The fumes aren't harmful like bleach and it works very well. It has a pleasant smell too.

i also use vinegar in really hot water...should i switch to something else?

You can pick up a viv cleaner at your local petshop,i use that on the furnishings in his cage and wash with water.Just spray in the cage and on the glass and wipe with wet paper towel,then dry.

The vet I took my Beardie to said he cleans all his reptile enclosures with Dawn dish soap. It's safe enough to use on animals in the wild (oil spill clean up, etc.) so it's safe to use on your enclosure. He said about once a month he uses bleach diluted to anti-microbe his enclosures. He said he's got a Bearded, 2 Black Iguana's and some other stuff, and he's a breeder. I WAS using Zoo Med's Wipe Out Cleaner but that stuff is WAY too expensive to keep buying 8oz. bottles and around my area a 32oz. isn't available (I actually have to buy a case of 8 @ $86 to get it from a store in Lancaster, PA). He also said isopropyl alcohol is ok to use too, just make sure it's completely evaporated before putting your Beardie back.
