Hi all...just wondering if butterworms are a good staple for for my 2 beardies? I give (on a daily basis) fresh greens and fruits all day, at 7am they get repti worms for breakfast, then around 10 they get crickets dusted with calcium, then around lunchtime they get more crickets and as a treat I offer meal worms (and they love them) I was wondering if butterworms could be used in place of crickets? Crickets are loud and stinky no matter how clean I keep that 40 gal tank! I feel aweful as I gut load my crickets prior to feeding them to my dragons with goldfish flakes, fresh greens..ie..collard,mustard strawberries bannanas oranges and they love the dry quakwr oats (uncooked) I think I have the fattest juciest crickets and then I feed them to my dragons!
So just wondering if I can replace crickets with butterworms.

Absolutely not, butterworms should never be fed as a staple. They are high in fat and not very healthy to be fed in large quanities. They should be fed rarely as a treat. Mealworms shouldnt be used at all. I would stop feeding him those right away as they are of no nutritional value and have a hard shell that can cause impaction. Stick with crickets, reptiworms, or dubia roaches. Those are the best staples.

Butterworms are a great staple actually IMO.. are you reffering to waxworms?

I've been using Butters and Phoenix worms for years.

You can also feed hornworms or silkworms as a staple and some butterworms are fine they will not hurt anything to use them.

Dubia are a great staple and once you have a colony up and going you should not have to buy any more feeders every unless you want buy them for treats.

Butterworms may be a very expensive staple but they have twice the calcium as other feeders and are not fatty like waxworms are. They are a great source of protein but I use dubia and superworms as a staple then as a supplement, once a month I order hornworms, silkworms and butterworms from Mulberry Farms.
I agree with the other poster regarding mealworms....they're a no-no.

Sorry for the multiple post>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> stupid computer was freezing up

I order my horworms from www.greatlakeshornworm.com and get the egg cup combo and let them grow. It takes about to weeks to reach 4 inches so depends on what size you need you have
plenty to feed.
We get our butters from www.premiumliveworms.com and get 250 for around $11 then shipping. But like said above I think Dubia are the way to go.

Thanks everyone for all the quick respoces...I must say "WOW" TO 250 BUTTERWORMS FOR $11.00!!!Im certianly going to place an order! I usually order my horm worms from mulberryfarms and my repti worms from reptiworms.com and I though both places were fairly reasonable...but you have certianly topped that!!!FYI... If you go to reptiworms.com to place an order, when you check out put bearded20 in the discount box and you will get a 20% discount off your purchase. That a perk for being part of beardeddragon.org )
I hear soo many things with regard to feeding that I am making myself crazy! I know the meal worms arent the greatest and I will not buy them again.
As for the butterworms, I heard they are an awesome staple food loaded with calcium and low in fat so I thought I would try them. I truely hate these crickets!!!!!
I have had my beardies for about 5 months and if I could figure out photobucket I would love to post a few picts for you all to see. Cosmo & Kahula are my life as is Chester my 11 yr old Iguanna, Bullet & Shadow (2 german shepherds) Harely (my litl beagle) Jake (my umbrella cockatoo) Taz( my citron cockatoo) and Squeakers (cockateil)...I have a real petting zoo!!
I think Im going to give the butterworms and shot and see if my beardies like them...if they do whats the worse that will happen...they gain a little weight and go for a swim to work it off :) They love the bath tub!!!
Thanks for the websites for the worms...that is extremely helpful!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
