My bearded dragon, Civ, has been running, bumping, dancing with/into the glass since may be late December. Civ is 7 months old and I still don't know the sex of Civ.

Anyway my 1st question is can anyone tell me why Civ is doing this?

And my second question is do only males seem to have interactions with the glass i.e. Dancing, running, bumping, etc.?

Thanks,
Jestor

It's not just a male behavior and it's fairly common. It can happen for a variety of reasons but it's usually because something isn't to their liking in the tank (temperature, shade availability, food, etc). and they want out. It can also just be that they are curious and don't want to be cooped up. If you have a safe spot for Civ to roam around a bit and explore outside of the tank (well supervised) I'd give that a try and see how he does.

Okay thank you. I'll make sure to take Civ out more, I don't really do it because currently I'm trying to clean my room to make room for Civ to even roam around. I just thought Civ was bumping into the windows because of Civ's reflection.

Anyway thank you again,

Answer to first comment: Yeah I thought it was about Civ's reflection for he most part.

Answer to second question: We bought the 40 gallon tank when we first got Civ. So, I think it may be big enough.

Sorry but ..... 40 gallons IS NOT ADEQUATE for a full grown adult central bearded dragon, you will need to upgrade Civ eventually to a 4ft long x 2ft wide tank .

Standard tank size here (Australia) for a SINGLE ADULT CENTRAL BEARDED DRAGON is
4ft LONG x 2ft WIDE x 2ft TALL = 453 LITRES VOLUME = 120 GALLONS, . and if 1ft 6" tall the volume = 340 LITRES = 90 gallons.

40 GALLONS = 120 LITRES is VERY SMALL for an adult beardie.( I use 100 LITRE tubs for my rearing tubs.) An adult beardie will be very cramped and hardly able even to turn around in such a tiny tank.

In canada a 2 ft wide by 4 feet long by 2 feet high is only 75 gallons not 120. My 120 galkon is 6 feet long and 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall. So depending on where you live it may differ on tank size. My 7month old is in a 3 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet tall and. There is more than enough space. Its considered a 40 gallon by canadian standards.

This is all getting a little confusing, so I feel the need to point out that both gallons and cubic feet are measures of volume, so unless there is a difference between American gallons, English gallons, Canadian gallons, and Australian gallons, as well as cubic feet, the same number of cubic feet is going to be equal to the same number of gallons no matter where you live, although there may be differences in opinions about the minimum size of a tank for an adult bearded dragon, and differences in the way the tanks are labeled and sold in different countries.

Example: 1 cubic foot = approximately 7.5 gallons (according to my research). Our beardie's tank is 6 feet long x 18 inches (1.5 feet) wide x just under 2 feet tall, and is considered to be 125 gallons, and if you do the math, it comes out approximately right. Our beardie is a little on the small side of average for an adult at 17-18 inches long, so he doesn't seem to have any trouble turning around in it. We considered a 6 x 2 foot tank, the next ready made size up available, but it was too tall for me to reach him on the bottom, and we would have had to get one custom made to get the extra floor space without the unwanted extra height (taller than my arms are long), so we decided this would be adequate for the price...

And BTW, they all have their own different individual responses to the "ghost beardie in the glass". Luckily for us, ours seems to know that his "little friend" is there, but doesn't seem to want to fight with him or get too crazy about it. We're really not sure what he makes of it. :?

Thank you for clearing this up. I could see that it was getting a litttle messy. Thank you all for the information.

With thanks,

Sorry but not in canada. Your tank is only 100 gallons. To be 120 as there ia no 125 in canada tank size. It neednto be 3 feet tall. And cubic feet are different here as well because we dont use it. Different system oof measurement.

Posted by moderator: I don't think it really matters what the tank conversions in Canada are and that was sort of getting off topic. This is the conversion chart we refer to on this site: https://www.beardeddragon.org/articles/conversions/ As stated there 48" L x 24" W x 24" H is equal to a 120 gallon tank. And, 72" L x 24" W x 36" H is equal to a 270 gallon. I think those equations are more what the OP is interested in.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
