Hello I have a 2 yr old female beardy named Lucy. I notice a small bump on her jaw. At first I thought it was a bite from a cricket. It stayed small but was there about a month. I noticed when I started feeding her more crickets(because I got new babies an had alot of crickets)that the bump started to rapidly get larger. Does anyone know what this mite be? She isn't in pain and is still eating and otherwise very happy and healthy. She has an appointment at vet but I'm a little scared and keep thinking the worst. SOMEONE PLEASE EASE MY MIND! thanks in advance.p.s. Love this site!!

Hi Leah....can you post any pics ? That would be helpful and someone may be able to help identify it or at least give input on whether it seems serious.

Hello,

Do you have any pictures of the bump?
You are pretty sure that it isn't a cricket bite that has gotten infected?

I do think a vet visit would be a good idea so that they could aspirate the bump to determine if there is infection present. She is still eating well?
What type & brand of UVB are you using, a fluorescent tube bulb or a compact/coil light?
How often do you use calcium for her?

Let us know how she is doing.

She on occasion eats dried millworms. Is it possible she got a piece stuck in her gums and it is what's causing the bump?. Its a reptisun strip light 10.0 and calcium once a week on her crickets.

Aw, she is just so cute ! What a pretty little face. :) I think it may be some type of cyst....a vet can help you out with that. Not sure what would cause it, some type of bacteria .

Hello,

Oh dear, she sure is beautiful. :D
I would definitely have a vet try to aspirate some fluids from that bump. As suggested, it could be an abscess or a cyst. They can culture any fluids from the bump & determine whether or not there is bacteria from an infection.
Has she fallen previously & possibly injured her beard area?
Is she eating well?

No injuries an I'm the only one that handles them. She had an injury in her mouth above the bump when she was 3 months old. She must have got a piece of the bedding I used to use stuck in her teeth some how. There was some blood. It looks like there is something in between her teeth in the gum. Is it possible I didn't get it all out? She got very sick and I was more worried about saving her life so I never made her let me see in there.she is very healthy now and eating good.

Ok update. So I took Lucy to an exotic pet vet to have the bump checked. She says"its a cyst" and explains that she is going to lance it. She leaves the room to return in 5 min stumped because it is what she describes as salivary mucocele. Something she has never seen before in a reptile. She said it drained as soon as she opened it and did not appear to be any form of infected fluid just saliva. Is this possible because I can't find anything online about beardy being able to have this? HELP!!!

Hello,

I am sorry that I didn't get back on the thread.
Was it an inflamed salivary gland? There was actually a case like that here on the forum awhile back. It had been caused by a bite from an insect & just gone unnoticed for awhile.
She said it wasn't infected though? Did they get all of the fluids out of it & did they prescribe any antibiotics?
Is she eating anything right now?
It is possible that the piece of substrate could have damaged an area in her mouth & it just festered there for awhile.
Let us know how Lucy is doing.

She got all of the fluid out and has me putting a warm cloth with a diluted antiseptic on it but not infected. She said that its usually caused by some kind of damaged to the mouth. I asked about substrate and she said not likely because it was so long ago. She is still eating great and otherwise she said she is very healthy. I got worried cause I couldn't find any articles with this being found in a beardy. I had thought originally it was an insect bite so maybe that is what happened. Thanks for replying I will just watch and if it returns we will go back and see what the other option are.

I'm a little upset with the vet. There is no doubt a bump and what I believe is a cyst but its about an inch above were she cut I don't think I should have to pay another copay now to go back for what I was already there to have taken care of. I think she cut it low and then when she went in to lance there wasn't a bump in that spot. Should I have to pay?

Hello,

No, if the vet didn't lance it in the correct spot she should offer to fix it & drain it again if needed for no more charges. There is no bump now, all of the fluid is out? I am glad that it isn't infected now.
An insect bite is a common cause of infection/abscesses or cysts on & in the mouth.
How is she doing today?
Is she able to eat very well?
