Rocky just turned 1 year old this September, Yay! And within a few days after his birthday he started to act a little differently. Appetite was down and he seemed more lazy. Then he started going over to the cooler side and would climb up his rock and face the wall. At first when he did this I'd pick him up and put him back on his hammock on the basking side. But he would eventually return to the cool side.
Then I thought, nah...this seems too early for him to go into brumation....but he shows no other sign of illness. His poops are normal looking, etc... I thought maybe he was going into a shed at first, until he started going to the cool side which I had read is a sign of brumation. So he is not in FULL brumation...just sorta spotty. He will go over to the heated side, and will muster enough energy to eat a hornworm or butterworm.
I felt better after reading the article on brumation on the forum. Now I just leave him be. I offer him some greens. Bath him a couple of days after he has eaten to be sure he poops since he doesn't want to bask as much...and in case he goes into a deep brumation he won't have food sitting in his stomach. I will probably take a poop sample to the vet just to be sure it isn't parasites, but I don't think it is.
Sorta sad when I see him now facing the wall. We all kinda just sigh and say 'Oh well...Rocky is bromating again...' we are like Eeyore losing a friend ...we miss seeing him staring out at us like he is the king of dessert animals. But we will be patient and caring and just wait for him to come back to his senses. I wish I could brumate. A long nap would sure be nice these days!
