Breeding black soldier fly larvae

I was just wondering if anyone is doing this and how it could be done. I know that the brand names of these larvae say that the reason their worms are "better" is because of what they are being fed. What makes their food so much better then what we "normal" people could come up with? Seems like it could be a money saver if you plan to use them as a staple.

Thanks!

As far as I know, they have not released any info on what they are feed, or how they are breed.

I do know this much

The black soldier fly doesn't have a mouth, they live for a short while and their only goal in life is to breed.

The whole no mouth thing is a bit creepy xD

It would be amazing if we did know how to breed them

I am thinking it might be a humidity thing. It isn't to hard to get someone to look at the substrate they ship in.

It wouldn't be that hard to do some trial and error. Sure it might be expensive in the beginning, but once you figure out how to breed them you will save all that money from not having to buy more.

You can find them in your compost bins. I know they are not found in all states though. I had a bail of hay that sat out in the rain for a few weeks, I went out to spread it out and it was full of larvae. I would have fed some to my beardie but the hay was molded. My yard, garden and compost is chemical free so I am considering collecting the ones from my compost bin. If you look on youtube you can find videos of how to raise them, I imagine you could just feed them all the foods that you would want your dragon to eat and some extra calcium.

So would I just buy the larvae and leave them in a tub with fruits and veggies? Or do you think some other form of food would be better?

I guess you could buy some to start off. I would go with the largest size you can buy and do not keep them to cool. Here is a video I plan of following. It looks like a 55 gallon barrel with some rubber hosing split length wise and attached to the inside of the barrel. drill a hole on the side close to the top of barrel and attach a tube going to a collection bucket on the floor outside the barrel. As far as feeding them, I would go with as healthy of a variety as you can. All your fruit and veggi scraps plus some vitamins and calcium powder would be great. Maybe add some powdered milk as well.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
