Hi There!
Firstly - WOW! what a fantistic, informative and well maintained site!
OK, I have a brand new beardie who is I think between 4 and 6 weeks old. He's about 7cm including his tail. I got him in a real hurry and as a result of finances have only been able to buy a small vivarium, and some crickets. I get paid tomorrow and so I'm going straight to the pet shop to pick up a UVA, UVB light and a basking lamp. I feel terrible about not having these things immediately, but circumstances wouldn't permit. In the interim, I have taken his tank outside and let him bask in direct sunlight (South Africa). Other than that I've used a bedside lamp which keeps the viv very warm inside.
I have fallen hopelessly in love with him and want to do everything right by him
The Vivarium is very small but it does have ample space for him to run about (I do plan on getting something much larger in the very near future). It's roughly 30cm x 20cm x 20cm. and in it I have put a nice branch for climbing and a couple of rocks which I soak in boiling water daily to clean. I have paper towels as substrate.
I have given him crickets (dusted in U-Grow, a calcium and D3 supplement), and am a little concerned that he eats these sparingly maybe four or five a day. I have also put some carrots, green peppers and patty pans (grated) in a small dish, and also a very tiny bowl of water. In addition I also spray a little water in his direction with a clean misting bottle.
He's very tame, crawling on to my finger if I "tickle" his chin. He's also very curious, and alert. Overall he seems pretty happy except for occasionally trying to "escape". He kind of stands up with his wee hands on the glass.
He really seems to like his branch, but very occasionally licks it so I'm a little concerned that this could be dangerous for him.
I have today noticed that he seems to be a little lighter in color and this worries me a bit.
I have done some research, and I have read that when they are getting ready to shed they go a little pale. Would shedding so soon explain the small appetite and the paleness? Is he perhaps low on appetite because of the change in his environment?
I know his habitat is far from ideal at the moment, and I want to rectify it asap. Any advice would be extremely helpful! Also how urgent is it to get a larger vivarium or will the smaller one do for a month or so?
Thanking you all in advance!
