I recently got some blue bottle flies for my chameleon and gave some to my daughters bearded dragon - he went crazy for them - I had dusted them with plain calcium - I've looked at the value as a feeder as compaired to crickets
Blue Bottle Fly Larvae
Moisture 68.54
Ash 1.44
Protein 16.10
Fat 8.21
Calories/Fat 77.73
Calcium (ml/100 grs) 32.90
Insect Protein (g) Fat (g) Carbohydrate Calcium (mg) Iron (mg)
Cricket 12.9 5.5 5.1 75.8 9.5
While they don't have the calcium are they ok as a treat when dusted ?- I buy them online (mantisplace and give them "fly food" and flukers orange cubes to keep them alive when I hatch them out) - does anyone know of any issues with them as a treat or even as a meal ? He didn't seem to want to the little crickets I had gotten at the local place that morning (they were really small) and I had already given him all the smaller big crickets (I only had 5 of them that didn't look to big - i figured a few flies would be fine to hold him over till she got home with the medium ones for his dinner. (he's still a youngster and gets 3 meals a day - first one being salad which he's not too fond of)
