Female dragon is 3 years old. She is a very picky eater and will usually only eat veggies that is made into a slurry. Still getting protein 3-4 times per week usually in the form of superworms. She refuses to eat crickets, butterworms, wax worms, and the local pet store only carries mealworms otherwise, which she had NEVER been fed, Vitamins are 4 times per wk Rep Cal Calcium and 1-2 times per week Rep Cal Multi. Since adult hood she never pops well. Average is about once per week, once every two weeks. She is bathed 1 -2 times per week for 20-30 minutes.

Today I got home to find that she pooped in her house, which she hardly ever does as she usually goes in the bath. It was sort of dry, so a little hard to tell, but looked like blood came out after the poop (a good amount, to guess maybe .3 to.5 ml). Urate was white, poop was brown and well formed, not overly smelly, sack around a little red tinged. However, the last slurry mixture contained strawberry, carrots, and cucumber. I have heard that strawberry and carrots can tinge the poop.

A couple points to mention, this poop was huge , most of her poos are large, but his was big. She hates to poop and always looks likes she's straining (sometimes although not always beards black), but her urates are usually soft, and her poops are always well formed. I know she is not dehydrated, and do not know what to do to help her poo easier, any suggestions much appreciated

Second she is on tile, but had a styrofoam/grout/water based den encloser, which has since been removed as I noticed she had ate some of the grout, cannot be good for her. I thought that the grout may have caused irritation as well.

Gave her a bath tonight after the HUGE poop, and she pooped again, in the sink. This one was smaller but also had a urate to it. Looked fairly normal. Investigated her vent area, and it also looks normal.

She had been tested for thee years in a row for parasites, all were clear. Was not tested this year (but may need to)

Specs 75 gallon enclosure, on tile ,bask temp 98-103, cool temp variable 68 to 75, Reptisun 10 UV since March.

Still very active crawling all over me, still eating, recovering from brumation (usually comes out by June fully), basking, normal color, in shed, strong, 511 grams(usual 503-512), 18 inches, never has eggs, do not feel any now.

Is there anything that can cause blood in poop besides parasites, is there anything I can do to help with pooping. Have already tried increasing baths, applesauce, olive oil, etc...

Update This Am: She crawled out of her blanket, crawled to her basking spot, and ate dandelion green, which is amazing cause she barely eats fruits, veggies, greens on her own, so I know at this point she is still acting normal.

UPDATE:
The only advice I seem to have been given about this top is is more baths, for prevention of constipation. So I have been bathing everyday since. What is strange is that there has been three, much smaller poops, all normal, in her bath, without blood as far as I can tell. Although, it still looks like she is forcing beyond force to go (always has, this is nothing new). However, I cannot remember a time that she has ever pooped everyday, as her regular was once every week or two, even when she would get baths twice a week.

Should this be a concerning issue? or should I just roll with it?

She's eating, although I am trying to lay off of her supers this week (she's been given one), and I am trying to get veggie slurry in her. She's basking, and so far has normal behavior. Did a check of her vent, looked ok, lifted the tail, all was intact, the area is not swollen, and when palpated Emmalee does not seem to care, so I gather it is not painful.

History: Young bearded dragon pooped once every 1-3 days up until her first bruamtion at 9 months old (yes 9 months), and into her first year of adult hood. Her poop schedule changed drastically after her bruamtion, and since she would normally poop on her own once a week, or once every two weeks, even when bathing 1 -2 times per week, at 30 minutes a session. At times, and once in a while I would notice a drop or two of blood to follow the poop, which would be normal for her given her very poor poop rate, and her general constipation. This dragon has not had a severe parasitic infection or coccidia, both responsible for most bowel issues. She has never experienced a prolapse.

However, after the May 28th, incident involving much more blood than expected. I had kept a very close eye on her. I noticed over the few weeks that at first she was pushing to go 15-20 seconds before she actually went. Then later she passed the poop normally, but was still pushing to go afterwards 15-20 seconds, exposing her rectum(which would return second after straining). All her poops after May 28th looked great, well formed, no blood, white urates, quite small. The size was due to the fact that I had now increased her baths to every second day for 20 minutes.

Other than issues with actually pooping Emmy was normal in behavior, activity, and eating.

I got her into the herp vet on June 15. He examined her a said she "was the healthiest bearded dragon he had ever seen in his practice, and her poo was the cleanest bearded dragon poop he ever saw", as well. There was no swelling (other than a bit of Buddah belly fat), fluid retention, masses, lumps, bumps, eggs, or signs of impaction. All good news, but what is going on.

Two likely diagnoses, not confirmed as it would require a very small rectal scope:
Due To Long Term Constipation Issues:

1) A Polyp - A rectal polyp can cause swelling and bleeding. This swelling can make it difficult to pass stool, as well as making her feel that she still needs to pass something. The polyp can get irritated and flair up, but can also shrink, but never really go away, think in terms of a human hemorrhoid. Her grout eating may have caused the flair up, causing the bleeding and subsequent issues after.

2) A Stricture - A bowel stricture is caused by passing large stools through the bowel. The large stools can cause a slight tearing in the bowel tissue. The bowel will heal itself, but sometime builds scar tissue around the tear site. This area becomes slightly narrower in diameter, making it more difficult to pass larger stool, causing straining, and bleeding. It can also cause a dragon to feel that something may be stuck also having the dragon strain after stool passes.

I am posting this I as I have not seen any threads related to these conditions, and thought it may be helpful for others. I have never really noticed overall constipation with Emmy other than infrequent stool production. She has never been impacted, and always digested her food well. So if you notice that the stool in your dragon is large, sometimes passing a drop or two of blood, and they are going infrequently, you may want to try to rectify the issue before the above happens. Although, it can be very difficult to know, as even the herp vet did not see an issue initially of a dragon only going once per week, and it could be different for each dragon.

Treatment for these issues:

More fibre, more hydration. Increasing the food intake of veggies high in fibre, and increased baths will help to prevent both issues from flaring up.

Emmy is offered, fresh veggies (although she barely touches them), and slurry veggies/fruit daily (she will usually eat this method), and her bath schedule is now every second day for 20 minutes, or until she poops. If she does not poop on the second day, another bath is offered the next day, with massage, and repeated until she goes, and then schedule returns to every second day.

Hope this is helpful for someone.

Just thought I'd let you know that this helpped me. Thank you for the information. I have only been bathing once a week and spraying my dragon every other day. I will increase the bathing to everyother day and see if that helps my dragon. She poops once a day and haven't had any problems, but twice now I have noticed a little blood and was worried. Thanks for the info.

Glad to have been some help, thanks for letting me know. :D

Thank you soo much for the information. I noticed the exact same symptoms today with my dragon that you described. It's a bit of a relief to know what is going on.

Thank you so much for the information! My beardie just did the same thing today, he pooped one drop of blood after a double poop. I bath him daily, and he usually poops every 1-2 days. He is one year old, but eats very little veggies. I was so worried when I see the blood, now I'm more relieved to know this might be due to him not getting enough fibre.

p.s. We just did a fecal not so long ago, I know he doesn't have parasitic problems.

It seems from others who I have talked with about this issue that dragons that do not eat a lot of veggies do seem to have this trouble (infrequent bowel movement/some blood present at times). Monitor the situation and make sure the blood is not getting worse or is persistent. If it does, get a second opinion from your veterinarian.

As an additional note to this post, although Emmalee is now on a much better poop schedule, she still seems to have harder urates, again. At first, they were soft with the increased bathing, but now they are as they always were, a little harder, and chalky. She is getting baths every 2-3 days for 20-30 min and she will still get a bath daily if she does not pass poop on her regularly scheduled bath. However, even though the urates are harder, she does not have issues with passing her bowel, and so far no blood has been noticed since May. So I am betting this is just her nature.

Which brings me to my next point:

Brumation...Emmalee is slowing down these colder days, and is not basking as long, if at all. I have now bathed her twice, but no poop. So dragons who brumate or slow down are definitely going to have increased problems when passing their bowels. I am now trying a new approach to this. I am going to feed syringe veggies only during this slow down phase, with mashed sources of protein twice per week, and of course, only if she is basking that day. Hopefully, the increase veg, lower protein will get the bowels moving easier through this brumation cycle.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
