Ok, so Izzy has been on his second round of baytril for almost a week now. He's doing better this time! Still eating(ish) and still active, so I'm assuming that's due to the probiotics :D

Anyway, this morning I found an extremely solid and kind of rubbery poop in his tank (nice topic I know, sorry!) and then he also pooped in his bath today, just the white bit (which was quite yellow?) and had a little spec of red (blood? ). I'm a little worried, is he maybe dehydrated? I'm bathing him every other day and trying to get him to drink water from a syringe also. Or is it due to the baytril? The vet also wormed him last Friday as one of my rescue beardies Xena has quite a severe case of worms, so all 4 of them were wormed just incase, even though they've had no contact.

He's also still breathing heavily and puffing out air and his nostrils are not unblocking any at all. They do go very white when I bathe them or when he plunges his face in his bath for a drink however. Still doesn't budge when I wipe it though.

Can anyone tell me the symptoms of a URI? And how it differs from an RI? My vet tried to explain but totally confused me, I need it dumbing down

EDIT: He also coughed up some water today while he was chasing his bugs, what could that be? Too much water? Is he being sick? :(

Ok, so I really don't know what to do! Izzy has come to the end of the two weeks of the second round of baytril. He has got better in some ways, he's eating well and is lively enough (head bobbing at my other lizard while he was exploring).

However he is still so dark, his nostrils are still plugged, he's still breathing heavily and today he started "coughing" again, three times in a row (after I wiped his nostril with a damp qtip). It scares me to death every time he does it.

I really don't know what to do now! I'm sat here cuddling him and sobbing. Probably over reacting, but he's had two rounds of baytril for a suspected URI but he doesn't seem much better. My vet said I could carry on the baytril for an extra week if I think he needs it, is this a good idea? He is having probiotics everyday also.

I feel like my vet isn't giving me much help, but he's the only reptile vet I know of around here.

I'm not sure I can be of any help. But PM Tracie (Drache) and see what she says. She's by far the brightest crayon in the box. It may be that the medication Izzy is on, is for the wrong kind of infection. Just don't panic (I know that's easier said than done) and treat Izzy with loads of love. I will say a prayer for Izzy.

Drache613 yeah? I've sent her a message so I hope that's the right person :)

I am the worst for panicking! Especially about my lizards. It's just he started being treated over a month ago, so he should be getting better :(

Thankyou for your support!

Hello Louise,

So sorry your baby has had so much trouble with respiratory issues.
There is not a whole lot of difference between a RI & an URI other than the types of bacteria that may be involved in causing the illness.
I would have the vet do a mouth culture to see what type of bacteria or possibly fungus may come up. A very common bacteria involved in a lot of respiratory infections & gum/mouth issues is Aspergillus. It is a fungus & can cause a multitude of problems. So I would get a culture done first to see if the bacteria that is being treated, if there is any bacteria, is being targeted with the right type of medication.
Which probiotics are you using now? Can you find any colloidal silver?
Aspergilloma can invade the lungs also causing respiratory issues.

If you can find colloidal silver, I would try that first since it is an antimicrobial agent.
What is your humidity in your tank?

Right ok, I will make another appointment with the vet then. He suggested taking a fecal sample but never mentioned a mouth culture. Are they expensive to have done? Not that I won't pay it out, of course I will if it has a chance of helping izzy, just money's a bit tight at the moment and I don't want to pass out in shock in the vets office :)

I am using soy yoghurt. My boyfriend said he had ordered me some acidophiliz (i think that's right) but it hasn't arrived yet :(

As for colloidal silver, ive never heard of it but I will have a look and see if I can get some.

I do not know the humidity, how can I find out? I would assume its low, as the only water in his viv is a small dish (about the size of his head) in the corner of the cool end, but who knows.

Do you think I should continue with the baytril? He has been on it for four weeks already with a five day gap in the middle. I won't be able to get him into vets before mid next week I think, so I'm not sure what to do.

Thankyou very much for your response :)

Hello,

That is a hard call. He has been on Baytril awhile & you said it really has not done anything for him yet that you can see?
Are you using the non dairy soy yogurt?
I am not sure how much the culture will run, probably at least $75 I am assuming. Maybe he will give you a break on it?? I would ask him about that.
I would take the water dish out at night though just to keep the humidity levels down during the cooler part of the day/night. If you still suspect a respiratory issue, I would take the water dish out during the day also, right now until the problem gets resolved.
You are in the UK so colloidal silver is banned. Stupid government trying to ban natural supplements. So you may need to try & order it from out of the country if possible, if you aren't able to find it in the UK.
Is he eating very well right now?

I know, I'm worried with the baytril as the first two weeks made him quite a lot worse, and everything I've read says it's quite hard on them, however the vet thinks it is light and doesn't seem too bothered about how long he is on it for.
Ok, I just wanted a rough estimate so I can make sure I can afford it :) and I will remove the water dish completely then, as I am syringe feeding him water anyway.
Ah, probably why I've not heard of it then, I'll recruit my boyfriend to help find some, he's better at finding things online.
He is eating normal for him. He has never eaten loads and he is being fussy about crickets so I've got some Phoenix worms which he is eating roughly ten of a day, and a few wax worms or super worms which seem to be preferred, typically. Im looking for some silkworms as they are his absolute favourite but the few UK suppliers that there are don't have them in stock.
I even caught him helping himself to his dish of greens yesterday morning without me having to wave them in his face :)
He's looking a bit thin though he has always been a slim lizard (and he still has nice fleshy legs, tail base and head) but I would love if he fattened up a bit.

Hello,

How is he doing this evening?
The Baytril can be pretty hard on them if used long term, yes.
I hope it doesn't cost too much for the culture. The prices do vary.
So he is getting a decent amount of water then daily? That should help his hydration status.
At least he is eating some though, which should help keep him from being too dehyrated. I hope you are able to find some silkworms then, they do tend to be pretty popular.
Wow that is great he was eating some greens, good for him! If he can maintain his weight or put on a little weight, that would be fine for him.
Let us know how he is doing!

Hi,
Sorry I have not replied, I came down with flu over the weekend and am still quite ill. Izzy and myself are under the care of my boyfriend and mum right now. I have been told izzy is still eating well, I've had minimal contact with him over the past few days so I've not been able to monitor him as I would have liked. He has an appointment with the vet on Friday evening so I will let you know how that goes :)

Hello,

I hope you are feeling better, so sorry you got the flu!
How is Izzy doing now? Poor guy, he probably misses you though. Definitely let us know how the vet visit goes.
Will you be going to the vet with him?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
