Black stripe on my dragons tail, should I be concerned?

Hi, my juvenile beardy has over the past 2-3 days developed this black stripe on the base of his tail. Any ideas what it is or if I should be concerned? The rest of his tail and body are normal, just the very first tail stripe is now much darker in comparison.
His set up is fine, with correct lighting, substrate diet ect. I also have an adult I have had for several years and she has not had anything like this.
Any ideas or advice?

Hi there....looks like a small band of unshed skin....I've seen similar patterns of shed on my own dragons. He'll be fine.

Does the black stripe look thick like un-shed skin? Try giving him a nice warm bath, but take a cotton swab and rub the black stripe (rub how the scales lay, rub towards the tip of the tail) and see if the skin comes off. Other than that, can you take some close up pictures?

My beardie got MBD which I've been battling the last few weeks. A side effect was unshed skin on his tail which has caused some die off at the tip. Get some shed ease at the pet store and soak him in it. Piled unshed skin can cause circulation problems and tail die off. Your beardie is probably fine but for a few bucks you can avoid onset of a more serious problem.

Hi Elsa, I'm sorry to hear about your beardie's MBD. I see you have a thread about it....I hope that he can be saved, it sounds pretty serious. I did want to mention though that uneven sheds are very common, and not really related to MBD. A small patch of unshed scales is very common for most beardies as they grow and also for adults. Most of the time no action is needed , the shed comes off eventually, but some owners like to use shed ease or just up the humidity in the tank or spritz the dragon a couple of times a day with a light spray of water to increase humidity. Aloe vera gel can also be used but only the kind with no added ingredients. So it was good to mention a product to help shedding problems but I wanted to assure Twool that there isn't a problem with that little patch high up on the tail.
