Big Beardie

I hadn't measured my 2.5year old beardie in a really long time and so I did today. He is 22 1/2 inches and 641 grams. He is by no means fat.

After measuring him, I looked up big bearded dragons and I read that the size of the dragon depends on genetics and how you cared for it when it was young. Maybe he has German Giant in him and I don't know but when I bought him from the reptile show it just said he was red x orange dragon. However what's interesting is that when he was young I fed him small phoenix worms instead of small crickets because crickets were too annoying. Could this be why he is so big?

they grow up to about 24 inches. when they exceed 24 then there is the possibility of the german giant gene.
there could be a possibility of the gene in there. but you would need to know the genetics of the parents to know for sure.

my male is 22 1/2, 3 years. he reached that length by 2 years and hasn't grown since.

I wouldn't consider dragons having the GG gene unless they grew to 26 inches, and be near the 1000g mark.

22-24 inches was the NORM before breeders started breeding for colors and morphs. The big strong dragons got phased out as the pretty colorful ones became more in demand.

IME, diet for the most part plays a role in how fast the dragon reaches it's genetic limit, it doesn't change it. Take Michael's Thor for example. We followed along his life and he was a beast. Michael was able to regularly feed him PW's, silkworms, butterworms, hornworms, and dubia roaches. Of all the people on this site, and all the dragons I've seen, I can safely say that Thor had the best diet i've ever seen. He quickly grew to 20 inches before he was even a year old if memory serves me correctly. But he stopped at 22-23 inches, where most dragons continue to grow for another half year to year.

Our beardie JIm was 21 inches long at 8 months old . I thought he was huge for his age , but have been told that can be normal.

I've been told by several people that hey think Toa might have GG blood in him. He is 22 inches and just turned one year old in December (he hasn't really grown much for a few months since he started brumating). I think it's just a mix of good genes and good food (knowing it's impossible to tell by he is from Petco). I just enjoy taking him out and hearing people comment on how big he is! :lol:

I've seen too many skinny/starving lizards. Nothing nicer to see than a big, plump dragon. Take Big Bertha, for example, all 700g of her.

I agree! It's so sad seeing poor sick dragons, though I'm glad they are getting help. To add a nice fat dragon to the mix here is Toa!

I don't know if you can see Big Bertha's thighs, but they are the size of large olives!

Not sure if this worked right or not, but this is Roy Cobb and he's a whopping 725g!! Just went to the vet yesterday and got a clean bill of health!! Woo hoooooo!!!

Well since we're taking about big beardies...
Check out the belly on this girl :lol:
She's been at my job (PetSmart) for about 4-5 months because she was returned for being mean (with a heavy infestation of parasites from her home)
Today is her last vet appointment & if she's still clear she will come home with me!
