Vivs are almost done and then I am going to begin the next crafty adventure, a rock wall.

I would like to know from those who have built them, or even if you haven't but have thought of the perfect tool to use, what tools you hve found to be the best for shaping the foam?

I just used a crappy steak knife and dragged the serrated edge to shape it. As a little suggestion though, dont get crazy with intricate details because when you apply the grout most will be covered up and it will take on a whole new shape anyways.

the best tool I've found so far is a rasp. They make them in all shapes and sizes at the hardware store. They're basically just rough files (almost like a cheese grater set in extra-fine or somethign lol) You can get the different sizes to do different things. I wouldn't recommend getting a set of rasps if you're only doing one project. They can save you time, but the aforementioned steak knife will do the same thing eventually. (as will your fingers, as styro is easy to just break/rub off)

I used an exacto=knife. You need a very sharp blade to cut the foam so it doesnt crinkle. The knife cut everything i needed, rounded the edges and all. I also used a dremel tool with a sand bit on there for making craters and whatnot after the layers were glued.

Thanks for your replies!

Those of you who reply, can you post a pic of your creation so that I can see how the tool you recommend shapes, etc. I know there is a post with pics, but finding your individual pics could take forever to find.

I have been experimenting with different materials over the past few days making fake rocks. I found the best carving tool so far is for my dremel.
Dremel 1/4" Tungsten Carbide Cutter Bit ( got it at lowes) works great on the high density craft foam. it was kinda pricey I guess at $15 but it works great shaving foam. it's even strong enough to carve the grout after it dries. I also used it to grind on the aluminum rails for the sliding glass doors. I just cut out the general shape with a hack saw blade and shave away. hope this helps. :)

For big things i use an electric carving knife and then for detail stuff I use exacto or box knives. works great and the exectric knife make it go a little faster. I like the idea of useing a dremel will have to try it out

I have been using a rotozip lately with great results and plan on purchasing a dremel with a carving kit very soon. I also use old steak knives, a mellon-baller is great for hollowing areas out, 60 grit sandpaper to smooth it out and help the grout go on easier, wood glue and toothpicks to fasten pieces.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
