i am getting a bearded dragon soon, and ive done all the research and have his tank set and everything.
i just wanted to know the best and cheapest staple of insects to feed him/her.
Cheapest, crickets, at least in the short term.
Best, that can be debated....but roaches are gaining popularity. Once your bearded dragon gets bigger, you can eventually move to super worms. My beardies love supers, and they are not to expensive.
Other feeders like hornworms and silk worms can get expensive. They are great feeders though, but usually not used as staples.
Well, you should offer variety if possible, but crickets are more easily available and for young beardie, they come in pretty small size for them, too. Phoenix worms are great for baby beardies, but can expensive. I would just feed Phoenix worms along with small crickets to cut cost. Superworms are great as staple, but your bearded has to be over 16" to eat them.
One thing I would like to add which a lot of people don't realize when getting a beardie. They eat a LOT of insects as juveniles (not nearly as much when adults). Anywhere from 50 up to even 100 per a day is not uncommon at all. that's 1500-3000 of whatever you are feeding them. The number varies from each individual dragon quite a bit, and even the type of insect you use as your staple, but consider that when figuring the feeding cost in as well.
