We are planning on getting our beardie soon...
I want to be prepared to get it the right foods... I have the color list bookmarked but I know some of the live foods aren't recommended when they are babies... We "plan" on getting a small one but we'll see.

Ok I know crickets are good (the size of the space between their eyes)
Probably start a Dubia beetle colony (if I use the "are" word it will be dis
allowed)

Wax worms as treats? once a day? Week?

What else can be offered daily or as snackszn & how often?

Also how often to dust crickets & where to put vitamins? & how often?

1 more ?.... If I goto walmart to get a thermometer... Where are they and exactly what am I looking for?

Thanks
Sean

The thermometers i think are the acurite brand (im not sure im from the UK) but generally you want a digital one with a probe n the end of a wire, that way you put the probe directly on the basking spot, leave it for 45 min, and you get an accurate reading!

Crix and roaches sounds good, sounds like you've got that all planned. I would never actually feed wax worms. They are highly addictive (as well as being really fatty and generally not that good.) For treats every now and then i get butter worms (for babies be sure to get the smaller ones)they are bright red and very wiggly, Gizmo goes nuts for them. Generally the more expensive worms i reserve as treats, such as silkies and phoenix worms.

What vegies have you planned on offering? http://www.beautifuldragons.org/nutrition is a brilliant resource to save to you comp ( i have a printout that goes to the shop with me, which tells you what you can feed, and how often, all colour coded!

Depending on what UVB source you are thinking of using, depends on what vits to give. If you go with a UVB tube (RepiSUN or Arcadia only, all the rest are quite bad, never go for a coil/compact) you want calcium PLUS vit D3. If you got for the stronger MBV bulb, you will want calcium WITHOUT vit D3. These should be given one feed every 5 days out of 7 (for babies/juvies) and multivitamins given the other Two, as they get older (1.5yrs onwards) the calcium should be given 3-4 days, and vits 1-2 days.

To dust the crix, you pop them in a sandwich bag ( i think you call them zip lock bags) with a pinch of calcium/vitamins, give 'em a good shake and vola! They should have a light dusting all over.

Hope this helps!

When I dust my crix (or beetles if you feed them) I use a small, deep tupperware -- put a third or so of a teaspoon of calcium dust in there, and put however many crix in it, pop the top on, shake softly, then carefully (being sure not to lose too much dust) shake the crix into the feeding container (which is not my viv).

Hope that helps

I'm going with the Reptisun 10.0 tube.... So thanks that helps alot!

Is it best to feed in a separate container? Or is it fine to feed in the viv?

So I'm clear 5Xa week on Ca and D3 ?

And if we plan to feed 3X a day do you dust all feedings? Or just 1 a day?

Thanks again.

Reptisun is a great UVB source. Sahara loves it :)

The reason I feed in a seperate container is so that there aren't any stray feeders hanging out in her viv. I do it just to be on the safe side. I've heard horror stories about crix munching on a dragon while they sleep and they don't wake up with disaterous consequences...

5 times a week is fine for the calcium, but don't forget twice a week with the multi vits. One dusting a day is fine--it's best to do this during the first feeding of the day.

I'm a NewB so I'm not 100% sure of this advice, but it's what I've gotten and it's been workin great so far.

Yep, thats right! lol

I feed in the viv, but gizmo is 2 yrs and on superworms now, so they dont get too far before she gets them!! lol

But looking back i would have used a seperate container for crix if i had the choice!! its much easier than chasing down the little buggars!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
