Bene-Bac question

I posted on my forum for Rin, however, I thought I would get this listed here as well, since it's an important question..

Rin is now on antibiotics, and I got Bene-bac to replace the good bacteria.
The vet said to give him the antibiotics every other day and the bene-bac every day. BUT everything I read says to give the bene-bac after the round of antibiotics are given.

Can I get some advise on that from Tracy or whoever else has used the product with antibiotics?
(Not sure if I spelled it correctly)
Thanks

Hi there. Sorry to hear that Rin has to take antibiotics. The Benebac works very well and most beardies really like it. It should be given while he is on the antibiotics to keep them from upsetting the stomach and even 2 wks after the antibiotic is done. You can even give it twice daily, a small pea sized amount on the nose. Benebac also helps with appetite too when they aren't even on antibiotics. A good thing to keep on hand.

Hope Rin feels better soon.

I provide it every 2-3 days even during treatment (1 notch out of the big syringe) in the evening (the meds are given in the morning, so out of sync with those). I found that cutting the tip off of a Q-tip and then loading the bene-bac onto the end of the q-tip makes it easier to stuff it in Dundee's mouth.

Hello,

As suggested, Benebac can be given daily, apart from the antibiotic. It helps the body's GI tract bacteria to balance out during the antibiotic round. Most dragons do tend to like it quite a bit so you shouldn't have any trouble getting your dragon to take it daily.
How long is your dragon going to be on antibiotics?

Thanks for all of the help. The reason he has to take it, is a very long story and I posted it on his journal page already (Rinvereau) ...long and short, he has a nip on his tail that never came off, and the first vet said it would be fine....second vet, a month later said he wanted to take blood, and believes his tail has blood poisoning going up due to some darkness on half of the tail. He will most likely be getting a partial amputation due to a misdiagnosis a month ago, and no blood work to verify the diagnosis, even with a partially blackened tail. I'd like to ask the first vet for a refund of the $70 vet visit, but I doubt that will get me anywhere, except more angry with him for misdiagnosing, not offering blood work, and taking my money for it.

On a related note, Rin LOVES the benebac, and when he saw the big white tube tonight, you would think I was giving a toddler candy. He squirmed toward it, and started licking his lips before I even touched his mouth with it. He also likes the antibiotic taste, thank goodness. I think my boy must have a sweet tooth.

Hello,

Oh I a so sorry to hear about Rin's tail! :( That is too bad he was misdiagnosed & now has a tail issue.
There is no way to save it?
I am glad he loves the benebac though that helps out a lot. That is so funny he was smacking his lips when he saw it. Is the antibiotic flavored?

I hope he is doing great!

That's a shame about Rin's tail. Awful that the 1st vet didn't take it serious enough so he didn't take the necessary steps to prevent it from getting worse. :( Sounds like the vet you're going to now is doing what needs to be done and will hopefully prevent it from having to be amputated. Poor Rin.

Just curious, what antibiotic did the vet give him that he likes so much? Great that he loves the Benebac, I thought he would. I've heard of some beardies getting so excited that they actually attack the tube to get to it quicker.

(Reposted from his forum page-Also, Im not sure what antibiotic it is, I will have to check it in the morning when I give it to him)

Got the call from the vet today....bad news and semi-good news.
Bad news is that his white blood cell count is SUPER high, and vet said that it's a really bad infection.

Good news is that the lower half of the tail is responding to the antibiotics and it's gone from almost black looking like a very dark shade of brown. The upper tail is what it should look like-tan/mustard yellowish). Rin is perking up, and becoming a lot more curious about his surroundings. He ran around the backyard today, trying to ditch me for some bushes. And for the past 2 months or so, he has been extremely lethargic, as if he were going into brumation, but not quite there. He has probably just felt lousy with the constant infection.

I'm going to see what happens with this round of antibiotics, and there's a chance none of the tail needs to be amputated at all, although I WISH someone would just get rid of that very small tip that just hangs on to the live flesh.

Is there any downside to antibiotics, if we decide to do a second 2 week round of antibiotics?

This question is two fold
1.Will it effect his kidneys, etc?
2.I know with people, their immune system grows used to the antibiotics and stops responding well to them. Im assuming that also happens to animals as well.

Thanks for the support.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
