My beardie has been on crushed walnut, with his previous owner, and i recently heard that it is bad for them? Whats the best type of substrate? I have heard sand can kill them, and many other confusing answers. It would be great to have an answer. Thanks.

You can use paper towels, newspaper, non-adhesive shelf liner, repti-carpet, or tile. If he's an adult and you really want to keep him on sand you can buy washed and sifted play sand at Home Depot. Personally, I'm all for tile. It's more sanitary, easy to clean, and never needs replaced.

Thanks so much! I was really a bit worried about him. hes 3 so i may end up with the sand. don't they slip around on the tile because of their nails? or does it work?

When you pick the tile out, you do a "grip test" by running your nails over it. If your nails catch/grip, so will his. If your nails slide right over with no resistance, move on to another tile, because yes, he will slip. Slate is generally recommended as the best for traction.
