Beardie Vomiting (+ Coughing?)

I wish my first post in these forms could be a nicer one, but my poor beardie has started having issues.

This morning, he was letting out sharp puffs of air, which I thought was coughing. However, I came in to check on him around noon today and he appeared to have vomited. There was clear, sticky mucus all over his hammock, along with a small bit of partially digested greens from last night. This was extremely worrying to me, so I made an appointment to take him to the vet - however, I wasn't able to get an appointment until Monday.

I'm still extremely worried about him and afraid that the appointment might be too long of a wait. With all of the closest reptile vets being at least an hour away and me having work and school, an emergency appointment before Monday would be extremely hard to book. However, I'd rather attempt to do that than risk losing my beardie.

I fed him some kale this evening, and he ate a good amount of it - about what he would normally eat. About 10 minutes later, he started making those sharp puffs of air - I originally thought this was coughing, but I'm now thinking it's more of a retching/attempting to vomit. Since eating about 3 hours ago, he has done this a total of 3 times, the most recent one being just a few minutes ago. He only made 2 little puffs of air this time, which seems like a good sign - he's not doing it as much. I also read that if a beardie is too cold, it cannot digest properly and may vomit, so I've placed him on his basking spot, and he appears to be resting comfortably there.

In his earlier episodes, he would also rub his head on his tank furniture and on the ground, and this morning he was scratching at his head with his hind foot, much like a dog. He is not shedding, so that couldn't be the reason why. Also, it's worth mentioning that this past week has been extremely humid in my area, and I was having issues keeping the humidity at proper levels in his tank. It seems to be back to normal now. The humidity could explain coughing, but I don't think it could explain the vomiting.

He is about 3 years old and lives in a 75 gallon tank with slate tile (rather than sand or any other substrate). Basking spot stays between 98-102 degrees. Cool side is about 80-82 during the day and gets to the low 70s at night, but never below 70. Base diet consists of kale, dandelion greens, and some generic adult bearded dragon food, and treats include clover, celery, and whatever beardie-safe fruits/veggies I happen to have. He gets crickets once a week dusted with rep-cal herptivite, and an occasional treat of canned grasshoppers (purchased at pet store, intended for reptile consumption)

What I'm mainly trying to figure out is if my beardie was coughing, retching, or both. I'd also like to get some advice on whether or not this situation is critical and should receive immediate vet care, or if it's okay to wait until Monday. He is eating, drinking, and hasn't vomited since noon, so I'm inclined to say the situation isn't critical, but I'm also not a beardie expert. I'm very attached to this little guy and I want him to be okay. I'm a first time beardie owner, so any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello,

That is good to hear he hasn't thrown up since monday then.
Did he possibly eat too late in the day & not digest it properly?
He does need a bit more calcium, even as an adult. Usually we recommend 3 times per week is sufficient for an adult.
The temperatures sound fine, do you use a temperature gun or digital probe to measure them?
It is possible the humidity has affected him a little but not sure it would cause vomiting. If the humidity is still too high you can try using a dehumidifier to help out.
Which UVB are you using?
I would say at the moment it doesn't sound like he is too critical so you could probably wait until Monday to take him in.
Just keep a close watch on him & let us know how he is doing.

Thank you for all of your advice!

He actually threw up for the first time yesterday (Wednesday) and hasn't thrown up since then, not Monday. Sorry for that misunderstanding! He did eat his food a little later than usual Tuesday night, so that could have been the cause. I offered it to him in the early evening, but he didn't touch it until later.

I'll go ahead and get a calcium supplement to add to his regimen. Should I continue to give him the Herptivite once a week, or should I lay off on that once I start doing the calcium?

I use a digital probe to measure the temperature, and currently I have a reptisun 5.0. I plan on switching to the 10.0 in August when it's due to be replaced, as I've heard the 5.0 doesn't put out enough UVB.

This morning, he unfortunately started having trouble breathing. Every so often he opens his mouth wide and takes in large, wheezing breaths. Luckily I was able to get him in for an appointment this evening. Fingers crossed everything goes okay!

Had you only been dusting once a week with vitamins and not dusting with calcium at all? He should be getting calcium 3 times a wk and vitamins once a wk since he is an adult. The UVB and calcium work together to help their bodies absorb the right amount sufficiently.

As you know, the 5.0 isn't strong enough for a bearded dragon. Would be a good idea to switch to the 10.0 as soon as you can. You have been using a Repti-Sun fluorescent tube, correct?

Besides using calcium and getting a better UVB bulb asap, it would be a good idea to offer some other greens along with the kale. Here's a site that shows the best to feed in green print: http://www.beautifuldragons.com/Nutrition.html

Good luck at the vets, hope all goes well.

Hello,

Oh sorry I misread that, but at least he hasn't vomited much again.
It does sound like a possible respiratory issue though with the recurring coughing, etc. I am glad you got an appointment for him.
Definitely upgrading his UVB source to the Reptisun 10 tube bulb would be a good idea to help boost his immune system & improve his overall health, too.

Let us know how he is doing.

I took him to the vet yesterday, and unfortunately things didn't go well.

The diagnosis was quite a shock - he was NOT sick. X-Rays showed he had clear lungs and there didn't appear to be anything wrong with his internal organs. The actual problem they revealed was that his scapula was severely dislocated, and because of the way it was dislocated, it was causing a deviation in his trachea. That's what was causing his trouble breathing.

He had been deteriorating all day, and was doing very poorly by the time we got to the vet. The vet told me about the possible surgery they could do, but also explained that it wasn't guaranteed to work. I didn't want to put my Beardie through extreme suffering for a surgery that didn't have a good chance of fixing the problem. The vet agreed that the best course of action was to euthanize him.

As far as how he could have possibly dislocated the scapula, I'm thinking he must have jumped/fallen off of his hammock and landed wrong. I'm wondering if it occurred after he vomited, and he jumped off of his hammock because he was spooked/stressed after vomiting. I didn't see it happen, and hadn't seen any prior jumping or falling.

This was quite a shock for me, especially because he was perfectly fine on Tuesday. He deteriorated very rapidly yesterday, and although I'm very upset to have lost him, I'm glad he's no longer suffering. Although this ended up being very different than what I thought the issue would be, thank you all for the advice.

So very sorry to hear this. It's a shame that the vet couldn't say that the surgery would help. Seems like you had no alternative, as hard as it was. He is at peace now and no longer suffering.

Hello,

Oh no, how terrible of a situation that ended up being for you both. I am so sorry it ended up that way, it definitely wouldn't have entered my mind for having a problem like that.
I am sorry for your loss & that it was so sudden.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
