Hi all! This post is more for new beardie owners but I thought I would share anyway in case anyone else struggled. So we got our 4 month old Mo in July and for the whole month of July and August he never ate a single vegetable. I was really starting to get nervous he'd be nutritionally deprived and definitely knew it was important to introduce this stuff as a baby! I tried everything:
-offered veggies everyday so he could get used to it just being there
-tried to entice him with mashed strawberries mixed with the salad to give it a sweet smell
-put 3 mealworms in the salad to give it some movement
-put some veggies on a white paper towel for contrast in colors so it was visually appealing
-put some veggies on his basking log hoping he would simply lick it as beardie's do while exploring
-I even got beardie salad dressing...etc. etc. Nothing worked!
Hopefully the above tips help before you have to do what I did. But if they don't work have no fear! For those of you who have a sassy baby like I do, here's what I did:
I started hand feeding him 2-3 small mealworms by hand each day. And when I say "by hand" I mean with my fingers, not my palm. NOTE: I only did 2-3 because too many mealworms can cause impaction for babies. Any who, after he got used to hand feeding I made a mealworm burrito! I tightly wrapped some dandelion greens around the mealworm's head half and he ate it! He was quite perturbed but nonetheless, he ate it. I had to do this step for awhile too because he really was just not interested in veggies without the mealworm. So, I wrapped the mealworm up just enough so he could still see there was a bug in there. I kept the greens tightly wrapped around the mealworm's head by holding a majority of the greens with my fingertips while letting the mealworm's tail wiggle around to entice him to eat it. Then one day I put just the dandelion greens in front of him, wiggled it with my fingers and he ate it without the mealworm (YAY!). It took a lot of patience because it had to do with a lot of hand feeding and half the time the greens would fall off the mealworm while he ate it. But it was worth it! So, stick with it and be patient. Now he eats veggies like a champ out of his big boy bowl and all  lol.
Mo seems to be very timid with everything and is overall high maintenance. Love him to death! He's just a lot of work at the moment... if you cant tell he's a very spoiled baby . I think it was really more that he had never been offered veggies before and didn't know what they were or that they were edible.
But ya! I hope this helps someone out there. Mo cant be the only drama queen out there!
