beardie not eating and being sluggish

hi, sorry, i will try baby food, he seems pretty much the same, i will try and add pics later today,
what else can i put in other than chippings, why are they bad :?:

Hmm I dont know. I really think you need to take out those wood chips as soon as possible and put down some paper towels or reptile carpet. He should be pooping EVERY DAY.

Have you tried force feeding him some nice baby food?

I said why you should change the substrate, and what to change it to here and also in my bigger post above that if you would like to take a look.

You have to change something, because SOMETHING must be wrong if he hasnt eaten in weeks and he only poops every 10 days. If hes already impacted from a woodchip then taking out the woodchips would prevent it from happening again. Please try giving him a bath in warm water. This may help loosen up his poop and help him let it pass.

This also still sounds like brumation if he hasnt lost weight. But you say that he still basks? Im really not sure. Hopefully someone with more experience can come by soon.

hi, ive literally had to force feed him some baby food, although he hated me doing it he has eaten some, also tried some crickets today but totally not interested, what i will do is try some carpet in his viv,
the puzzlingthing is ho he is still gaining weight while not eating, i got 2 poos out of him over the weekend which is more promising.
im going to to try and get some pics on now for you, thanks for your help

Ive had mine going on 8 months now, they are 11 months old, male and a female, my male is acting like you say yours is, not eating and not very active, although he will eat out of my hand, he wont go after any crickets in the tank, he's going to the vet on friday, so we're in the same boat.

Have you talked to the vet that gave him the thyroid pills to tell him that it didnt work?

glad he pooped 2 times over the weekend! He looks alittle dehydrated with the wrinkly skin. Do you give him baths?

Good work with the baby food. Keep trying that. Thats what helped my beardie to start eating again. After a few days of baby food he started eating again.

Oh can you tell me the brand of uv light that you have?

"Soloxine is the same as Levothyroxine which is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat hypothyroidism. This condition generally requires life time treatment. Dose is determined by periodically checking blood levels of thyroxine. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences increased drinking, urination, and appetite, or has behavior changes while being treated with levothyroxine."

Did the vet do bloodwork and did it show that his thyroid level was low? If so, do you need to take him back in soon for more bloodwork to recheck the level?

I agree with Elora about the wood chips and the possibility of impaction from them. Have you bathed him and rubbed on his right side from armpit to vent to feel for hardened areas which could mean that he ate some of the wood chips? There are 2 other reasons that I don't recommend using the wood chips, one because of it being impossible to clean all the feces and liquid from it which can cause bacteria to grow and the other reason is because the crickets love to hide in it so it's difficult to find all the uneaten crickets so they come out at night & can chew on him causing nasty sores.

I know you had been asked the details of the UVB light that you're using but I don't see where that was answered. Could you fill us in on this with the brand name, % of output, is it a strip fluorescent, coil, compact or mercury vapor bulb, how close is your beardie to this bulb? There are some dangerous UVB's on the market & we want to make sure your beardie has a good one. Another question I have, is the basking bulb a colored or white bulb & what is the wattage & size of the tank?

You mentioned that you're using a digital thermometer but does it have a long wire with a probe on the end? In the pictures, it looks like your beardie is trying to escape the lights in the tank, so it is necessary that we have more specifics on the UVB and the basking bulb including the tank size.

What babyfood did you feed him, were you careful to not go in from the front of his mouth but enter the side instead? That's critical to prevent aspiration and important to only squirt a small amount of food in at a time. How much did he eat? How are you keeping him hydrated? Once we get these answers, we can help further. :wink:

hi, ok the vet didnt actually do a blood test, he is just guessing it is an underactive thyroid due to the fact he is gaining weight without eating...this sounds really bad of him now.
the uv bulb i use is a reptisun 10 it is 48'' long and he can get within about 6 inches of it
the tank itself is 6x2x2 so rather large.. the heat bulb is a 100 watt and is white, it is approx 100 at the hot end, someone sugested it was to hot for him, but he spends pretty much the whole time at this end.
the thermometre is a digital with a prob on the end that sits in the tank, i also have one of those stick on thermometres you can see in one of the pictures.
the baby food i fed him on him on.. one was apple the other had veg in it i did put it in the side of his mouth but it was a mission to do so.
as for the vet im due back friday. but the last time i went it was after 10 days of the treatment i told him he was still the same, he just said carry on for a further 10 days, which will be up this friday, so i fear what he will try next.
im going to try the baths for him in the meantime.. thanks for all your help everyone x
