Beardie Hiding a lot.. In hot side of cage

I know there are several topics already about hiding but I feel my situation is a little different. I bought my juvenile beardie Kojo this hollow tree thing that he just loves to climb and bask on

.

The problem is, it's hollow and he also loves to hide in it. All the time. This is what he typically does.

.

He hides here in the hot side of the cage rather than using the half log on the cool side of his cage. He usually basks and climbs around for a few hours after meals but then spends the majority of his day hiding in the tree. He also sleeps in the tree at night. I'm concerned that he's not getting enough exposure to his heat and UV lights and that this could potentially cause health problems. Is this normal? Am I getting worried for no reason? If not, what should I do to help him?

Here's some general information about him

Age: Around 3-5 months I think (I bought him from petsmart a month and a half ago. Not too sure of his age). He is still a little afraid of me but we're making progress as far as handling goes. He loves when I hand feed him.

Housing:

I currently have a 20 gallon cage (which he is quickly outgrowing). The basking/heat lamp is "100 watt zoomed basking spot lamp" and the UVB light is "Reptisun 5.0 UVB" I give him 14 hours of light and 10 hours to sleep. At night I use no lights, the temp in my room is mid 70s. Substrate used is paper towel.

Temp: The hot side is around 90-95 degrees and the cool side is around 80 degrees. I'm not sure of the exact basking temp but the tree allows him to choose how close he wants to be to the basking lamp. Sometimes when he's at the top of the tree he gapes so I assume he is getting enough heat.

Diet: In the mornings I give him reptiworms. All day he has access to a salad of collard greens and yellow squash dusted with calcium and multivitamin several times a week as well as "nature zone baby bites" and "Flukers freeze dried crickets" (yes he actually eats the stuff, almost all of it every day). At night I usually hand feed him some more greens, give him more reptiworms and "zoo med mini can o' crickets". He poops once to twice every day. Sometimes it's a little wet due to the moisture of the "can o' crickets" but it is well formed and everything seems to be digested.

I'm hoping I'm worrying for no reason but I could use a little reassurance. Thanks in advance for your help.

Well your setup looks fine. What are you using to measure temps. Is there anything in your house that may scare him such as cats or dogs? It looks like you have the sides of the viv covered so he shouldnt be bothered by a reflection. If
it has been about a month since you got him it could be possible that he is still "settling in". More handling will definately help. In my personal opinion i dont think you have anything to worry about. Keep up the good work and he should come around.

MY GUY IS DOIN THAT TOO. AND I THINK ITS CAUSE I JUST MADE SOME CHANGES LIKE YOU HAVE DONE. CREATED LIKE A NEW LITTLE SPOT THAT THEY HAVE DISCOVERED. HASNT BEEN LONG ENOUGH YET TO SAY IF HE ISNT GETTIN ENOUGH HEAT OR UVB HE STILL BASK'S RIGHT AFTER EATING. AND I HAVE A CLIMBABLE BACKGROUND THAT ALLOWS HIM TO GET UP CLOSE TO HIS UVB AND HE NORMALLY PUTS IN A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME UP THERE. UNTIL I SEE A DAY WHERE HE DOSNT COME OUT AT ALL, IM NOT GONNA WORRY.

Is your uvb bulb a compact coil or a long tube?
Either way you need to upgrade to the reptisun 10.0, the 5.0 isn't strong enough.

is the 95 degrees the basking SURFACE temp? If so thats too low.
Like asked already, what you are measuring your temps with is important.

Those are two things you will need to change for the health of your dragon.

Compact coil bulbs are very dangerous to dragons. They actually cause more harm than good. You are best turning it off completely and buying a reptisun 10.0 TUBE or the arcadia 12% tube.

You also will need to get either a digital thermometer with probe, or a temp gun to measure your temps. The basking surface IS the most important temp in the whole tank.
Here is a thread you should look at about thermometers:

Would it be better just to get a powersun mercury vapor bulb? Otherwise I need to buy a new hood because the one I have is only designed for a 5.0 compact fluorescent. I should have known I wasn't getting a good deal when I bought everything as a bundled package.. everything that came with it seems to be inadequate :angry5: . If I do get the powersun bulb, is it acceptable as the only light used in his cage?

You COULD, but I don't feel its ideal. I've never used one before with bearded dragons so I can't really speak from experience on this one but they have had problems in the past, and the bulbs are kinda fennicky in regards to distance they have to be away from the basking spot.

You can just pick up a cheap under-counter fluorescent fixture from any home improvement store for around 10-20$

I had the same questions about my new 5 month old beardy. She hides behind a block of bark most of the time.
On feeding i find i have to take the food to her, and even then she sometimes wont eat anything. 4-5 crickets sometimes before she turns her nose up at them. I was also hoping to be able to handle her, but every time i get close she runs for it.
I leave her greens every day which she seems to eat some of.
Is this normal as i ve only had her 3 weeks

PS within a few days of having her I noticed small bits of tail skin and just today her whole stomach skin shed off

So is her behaviour due to early days, is it shedding or something else?

Cheers

Today I moved the basking light away from his tree and he seems to be out more. I think the tree was just getting too hot for him. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I will definitely be getting a new UVB bulb soon as well as a more accurate thermometer.

I've been going through this for the past month now too. I wish I had kept count of every time I've gone back to the pet stores to return things that they sold me and were just plain WRONG. I got a coil bulb the first time too. Mine wasn't in a box, it was in that hard plastic that you practically need a blow torch to get into. They DID give me my money back, no questions asked. If you take it back there, you shouldn't have a problem. :)

Also, as far as the thermometer, I got this one for $8 US, but I just went to petmountain.com and saw the same one for $5.40. You want one with a probe and digital is the best.

For UVB, Reptisun is the best. This is what it looks like.

Mine came from Petco, but it looks like this site is having a pretty good sale. :)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
