Hello everyone. I have been lurking here for awhile trying to bone up on my beardie knowledge before delving into the world of Bearded Dragons. I have learned a lot from you all so far and once I get my beardie I hope to learn a lot more. For once I am researching a pet before I actually get one. I wish I had done this before I got into tropical fish keeping as it would have saved me a lot of time and aggravation trying to learn as one goes- which from what I take is virtually impossible with beardies.

Let me tell you about myself. I am female, 30 and an Ohio State Alumni and an admitted animal addict. I have had iguanas before when I was a teenager so I am not a complete newb to the Herb world but beardies seem to be a lot more difficult than igs. I have had newts, chickens, crawdads and my current menagerie consists of 2 cats, 9 tropical fish and a Palomino Quarter Horse. I hope to add a beardie before the years end.

Here is my current plan.

I am going to purchase a 55 G. glass tank. I figure there is no point in going any smaller and hopefully one day when I get my house I can movie my bd into a bigger tank and use the 55 G for cichlid fish. I am going to use tiles for the bottom and have a lot of branches and rocks. I am going to have the Viv set up for about a week before I even think about getting a bd. I want to make sure that the temperatures are consistant in both the basking and the non-basking areas. I feel it will be a lot less of a hassle getting the temp under control before getting the bd. I will have the Repti-Sun light and a high wattage heat bulb.

For food I am considering breeding lobster roaches and supplementing with Phoenix worms. I have been reading up on the lobster roaches and I have heard that they are easier to keep and smell better than crickets. I am still considering my options. I'd like to have the food for the bd before I get it. Luckily I live in the Columbus Ohio area which is home to many pet stores and reptile specialists.

I hope to learn a lot from you folks in the future and when I will post some pics as the process gets going.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I hope to buy my tank this weekend. I am hoping to find a good Christmas deal on a 55G.

Here in Columbus we are lucky to have a really good source for Reptiles called Captive Born Reptiles. I am going to stop over there and see what they have to offer in terms of BD's and BD set ups. http://www.captivebornreptiles.com

Just posting to let everyone know that I made the first step to beardie ownerdom. I bought the enclosure. I bought a 36" x 18W x 16H tank with a screen top. My dad found me a stand that fits perfectly for free. I am probably going to purchase the lighting tonight. I have decided to go with a T-Rex 100W MVB (I hope that's enough...the room is in the room with the furnace so it has a constant source of heat and doesn't get below 65 degrees.I am going to go searching for tile tomorrow probably. I have decided to go with a beach scene...sort of like a desert oasis type thing...but since I am a huge geek fan of the show LOST I am going to do some LOST references there (if you are familiar w/the show...I am going to do some Dharma signs). It's a work in progress but I have time since I won't start looking for my beardie until after the Holidays (too many days away).

Anyways...there's no turning back now!

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
