Beardie Adoption Question

Hello guys,
Well I joined the forums a few years ago w/ the intent of getting a dragon but life happened (namely a now 2 year old little riot.. err... boy) and I never got one. Well I took one of my leopard geckos to the vet because she was egg bound. Long story short he operated on her and she didn't make it  . So I told the receptionist I now have a 45gal tank that is unoccupied and if he knew of any geckos or beardies that needed a home to keep me in mind.
He calls me the next day to say that he has 2 dragons and a leopard gecko that he would be willing for me to come in and look at to see if I would want any of them. So here are my options....
Beardie A: The owner brought it in 'sick' and while the vet had got him healthy and eating and back in good condition by now it has been 4 months and the guy has never even called to check in on it so the vet has 'adopted' it. An adult around 2-3years old.
Beardie B: This little guy... wow what can I say but UUUUUGGGGGLLLLLLYYYY! lol you know those 'a face only a mother would love' animals? This would be Gargoyle (as they have aptly named him). He came from petstupid and they gave him to the vet in exchange for the vet bills. This little dude had MBD and (we're thinking) some genetic issues too. His tail is kinked in about 8 spots and his back is humped up in the shape of a U, there is a huge lump on his right shoulder (think Quasimodo). He is 5 months old and eats and poops just fine... he just looks like a bearded dragon freak show.
Gecko: .... I'm really not leaning towards this guy tbh. I would rather take one of the dragons if I could.

So while I would love to take Gargoyle for the simple fact that he is so dang ugly you can't help but love him I do have reservations. My husband is concerned for me getting a 'special needs' dragon as my first dragon and because he is young we don't know what his personality is going to be when he's older and we really do want a PET (i.e. something my son can pet, he is VERY gentle with our geckos). The older one is in good health and really calm and sweet (climbed up my arm to lay his head on my shoulder when I held him... AAWWWW!).
So my question is this, do you think it would be a 'gamble' to get Gargoyle and see how his personality turns out? We are also cautious of what kind of health problems he may end up having later in life (anyone with experience with special needs dragons, it would be great to hear from you).
Anyway, thanks for reading. :) Any comments or input would be great. :blob8:

Get both! Ok, ok, maybe not... I'd honestly go with Beardie 'A' Only because he would be your 1st. I chose an adult in good condition for my 1st. I'm very thankful for my choice as the vet bills add up fast! She was eating like a little pig and messing everyday. I took her for a check up just because 'It's the right thing to do' and... Coccidia! :banghead: $100 gone in one day on one animal. Beardie 'B' may have a life full of vet visits due to his special needs. It's hard to budget for the unexpected when you'd still be learning about the basic cost of a dragon. I know it shouldn't come down to money alone, (the heart wants, what the heart wants) So... my suggestion is to flip a coin! Stay with me, there's a reason. (Ya never know what side ya want til it's in the air...) You will feel joy or sadness depending on what you see when it lands. Go for joy  Hope I helped a little, all the best, post pics when you decide :D

I would suggest Beardie A only because you do have a child who has already suffered one loss. Beardie B may not live as long with the special needs it has. Also right now Beardie B seems to be in the best hands. The vet himself will probably keep him giving him everything he needs. Special needs beardies can also take up a lot of your time so I think if you go with it you need to consider whether or not you have the time to spare.

Good Luck with your decision :D

I would agree with Irwinshealth. If it was me, I would wait until my boy was older, and had a healthy pet beardie before I rescued special needs dragons. Especially after the loss of a gecko, I would want to go with the healthiest choice. But you'll know the right thing to do. Wait on an answer, and it will come.

I say go with "gargoyle" because he sounds like he needs a really good home. The adult does have a bigger chance of survival tho. What you could do is get the "ugly baby" and if he doesn't make it get the other guy.

I would totally go with the first one... no need to adopt one that may have a lot of issues later on. Especially since the first one was sweet, I'd go with him.

I would say go with beardie A. The first reason is because of your son Beardie B sounds like he has a long road and may not make it. Also the vets bills could get extremely high it is ridiculous how quickly they add up. Also because this is your first dragon taking on a very sick one might be a challenge.

Oh dear, I'm beginning to feel quite bad for Gargoyle. It seems the odds may not be in his favor. :( Perhaps, the vet would allow you to give out his information as someone on this site must live close by, and may be interested. :D That way both 'second chance dragons' would be able to find a loving home. (after you make your choice, ofcourse)

I don't know where you and the vet are located, but I would *love* to take Gargoyle!

...just thought I'd throw that out there... :D

I will give the vet a call and see if he would be willing to ship/adopt out to someone from the forums here (I'm going to say I doubt he would want to ship but IDK) but in any case I will at least post a picture of Gargoyle for you all to see..... he is just so darn ugly   you gota love him.
I have to go out of town this weekend so I'm going to 'sleep on it' and have a decision when I get back into town. For NOW I'm thinking I would get the adult dragon and then once we move (next 6-9months) if Gargoyle is still available and when I have some experience with dragons I'll look into putting together a habitat for him.
If anyone is in the Cincinnati area though and would like information on Gargoyle send me a PM and we'll see if we can't get him a home even if it isn't w/ me. :)

Are you 100% sold on the name 'Stella'? I'm thinking that 'Gargoyle' AKA 'Quasimodo' could pal around with 'Esmeralda!' (Don't blame me, blame Disney... )

That is a really great idea, Morphmom.
Thank you. I honestly wish I could adopt them all. (I think alot of people feel like that here. It's why I love this site so much  )

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL, now how perfect would that be???

I do want to take in a rescue at some point... Perhaps Gargoyle is too far away, but the idea of taking care of a "special needs" dragon is appealing - I know I could give him the love and attention he needs and deserves, even if he DOES look like he hit every branch on the way down the Ugly Tree... Awww!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
