Bearded in Reptile store :(

I had to go out shopping to pick up some things at the mall and stop by a reptile store that does a show/ sells reptiles. I have always dislike this store because of the way they care for their animals is wrong and because I worked a petstore basically across the street from this mall I along with other people in my department learn to hate that store. Too many times did i have people coming in looking for help because their ball python refused to eat; they had an anole in a small container so they thought it was okay so when it died wanted to know why? I have my first beardie right now and I have two other Geckos that I had for 4 years. I am new to being an owner of a beardie who I have only had for few months so when I saw a full grown yellow beardie in distress.. it made my heart sink.
It had to be maybe a 15 gallon. coconut pellets ( i think) because it wasn't sand but looked rougher. He/She was at the side of the tank scraching away in a panic. I almost wanted to buy it just to get out of their but I know that wouldn't do me any good and would only give them a profit for poor care of their animals.
This there any place we can call ?? I knew I shouldn't have gone in there but I always go to see if things get any better.. they don't and its been years now.

Uknow maybe just tell the guy u are taking really poor care of this thing and I would like to give it a home and tell him u will report or maybe convince him into giving u a really good deal idk besides that

I'm scared to death to post this, but I am feeling brave. The ASPCA is not on the side of reptile owners. They consider reptiles, including bearded dragons, to be exotic pets and they do not support reptile owners.

Here is an exerpt from their website - it is their position on exotic pets and the page has a picture of a bearded dragon on it:

"There are many ways you can help end the exotic pet trade:

•Do not buy exotic animals, including certain birds and reptiles, from dealers or pet shops.
•Refuse to patronize stores and websites that sell exotic pets.
•Educate family and friends about the animal welfare problems and safety concerns related to keeping exotic animals.
•Do not visit roadside zoos and menageries that breed or display animals for profit. Take a more active role in helping to end the exotic pet trade by working with the ASPCA to pass legislation that prohibits the sale or keeping of exotic animals. Stay up-to-date about current legislation to ban exotic pets by joining the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade. "

The ASPCA are the people who want to ban us from having snakes and reptiles. They will NOT help you if you call them. I'm so sorry to say that. If you look at their website http://www.aspca.org/fight-animal-cruelty/exotic-pet-faq.aspx it is pretty scary. At first glance I thought how awesome! They are against wild caught reptile....but they are also against captive breeding.

Another exerpt about exotics bred in captivity - the page this came from has a picture of of a bearded dragon on it:

While it is common for exotics to be taken from native habitats, others are mass-bred in captivity—but life for these animals is no easier. Similar to puppy mills, conditions at exotic breeding facilities are often very dismal and the breeder animals are often forced to live in less-than-sanitary conditions. Breeders also often remove newborns from their mothers within hours or days of birth so that they can be hand-raised. Such traumatic separations leave both mother and infant emotionally scarred"

If you like puppies and kitties, the ASPCA is a best buddy. If you are a reptile person, they aren't.

YEAH it is totall BULL****. They are a huge voice behind the movement to ban our reptiles. It's a betrayal, in my opinion. I find it sad that I must refuse to support the ASPCA because of this position, because they can do a lot of good, just not for us.

I agree completely. From what I have heard, none of the 'animal abuse' organizations will respond to reptile neglect claims. Our local shelter won't take in reptiles at all, and neither will the Humane Society. :? Shame on them.

It's depressing. My husband and I were looking at what organizations supported the python ban, and their positions on reptiles as pets in general, and the animal welfare organizations are right there against us. I've got so many things I want to research, and this is one of them.

To the OP: have you been down to our enemy store again lately?
