hey all
my poor poor boyjust been diagnosed with a slight lung infection but its not that bad but hes been put on 0.2ml of baytril twice a day which ive gotta administer! ahhh! last time i administered meds to him i got some in his lung but the vet has shown me how to get into the side of his mouth safely. however what im concerned about is ive got to mix the baytril with fruit juice! i forgot to ask the vet which fruit juice but the other nurse told me to use sugar free orange juice, is this safe???? as i know they cannot have oranges or anything citric so is this ok? i need to administer his first dose this evening so am hoping i will get a speedy reply! lol, if the orange juice isnt ok let me know if there are other fruit juices i could use and what they should and shouldnt have in them? oh also should i now start probiotics, if so how often and can i put them on his greens along with either his calypso or nutrabol, whichever hes due that day???
thanx all

Well, anything citrus is a no no. :) Apple juice can be used, but your best bet is to just put it into his mouth. If you have a small plastic card (like the ones you get for your key ring or use a credit card) slide it into the side of his mouth gently. When his mouth opens just squirt the baytril into his mouth. Offer him a favorite food right after and praise him for a good job. You can practice with just water mixed with a little bit of apple juice until you get it down pat, this way you wont lose any of the medicine, and his initial try with this will be more pleasant.

Probiotics will be fine, just offer as directed on the bottle. :)

hey thanx for the reply i really didnt think orange juice sounded good, they did mean diluted concentrated orange juice by the way, lol, so apple juice is this pure apple juice or watered down apple juice? and how much should i put with the baytril?
ive got a plastic syringe that i can get his mouth open with its only 0.2 ml of baytril and im outta worms for him at the mo they should be here tomorrow so in the meantime i cannot treat him. bless!

Watered down is best. They are more sensitive to taste than we are. You can offer him a small piece of fruit if you want as a treat? Or some kind of veggie, mine loves green beans!! I chop them into small bite sized pieces and offer as a treat.
Best of luck, I know how hard it can be when a dragon is sick!

thanx but ive just remembered how i used to give him his reptaid as thats liquid also. ive now injected a wax worm with 0.2ml baytril and he ate the worm, lol, however ive never had to use baytril before and its horrid stuff its really thick and dont think he liked it at all, he refused to eat any more worms after that however im really hoping i can continue his treatment that way as im absolutely terrified of getting it into his lung, before i remembered about injecting the worm i gave him 0.1ml of apple juice sugar free and he went mad! lol, as i squirted it into the side of his mouth he moved and it went in at the front? isnt this how you end up getting it in their lungs? sorry but if i really am going to have to squirt it in then i wanna do everything i can to avoid pumping it into his lungs, is there a way to completely avoid it? ive gotta do it really quick otherwise he goes mad and scratches and i end up loosing my grip and him getting away, i cannot keep his mouth open long enough to determine where im squirting it.

Normally you don't squirt it down their throat. They are pretty good troopers at lapping it up when you get it into their mouth initially. There are those who thrash their heads around trying to get the yukky stuff outta their mouths (which freaks most of us out) but that is ok, just tricking him is a good way of getting it down!!! (just like a human child) :)

hmm nope my lil guy is like no other, he dont lick nothing whatsoever off his nose, i had to squirt it in his mouth then nothing happened he didnt swallow or drink it, i put him back in his viv then it looked like he started to drink it he was opening and shutting his mouth and licking his lips like they do when they eat, i have to squirt it in he will not drink it, lol. am gonna have a fight on my hands i think.
hes gotta have 0.2ml morning and 0.2ml nighttime, if i only manage it once a day do you think thats ok just the meds will go on longer? its not a bad infection just slightly but obviously my vet wants to nip it in the bud while it is mild.

Unfortunately you have to follow the doctor's instructions... He obviously needs to have the medication in him all through out the day like that so the bacteria doesn't start to resist the medication, making it impossible to get rid of. I am not sure what else to do, besides inject the medication in the bug like that or even a piece of fruit or something.... Can't they give him a shot? One time deal, its done...

Hey there,

Im in the exact same situation at the moment. Miso, my little 12" baby is on baytril at the moment too. She will also NOT lick or drink from a syringe normally which makes matters trickier.

She absolutely loathes it and we have a daily battle to get it into her aswell.
I was told to try and mix it with fruit juice aswell, but it didnt work for me, because as soon as Miso see's the syringe coming she is on the defence. She doesnt seem to care about the taste, just the syringe.
Frankly its a huge bother to get 0.01ml into her, I dont fancy having to get MORE into her by mixing it up.

Generally Ive found the best way to administer it is to put her in a burrito before attempting to open her mouth.
If I try and open her mouth she'll just pancake and wriggle backwards. With the burrito she cant scoot away.

I was told by my vet to insure safe injection you never want to inject it down her mouth because she can aspirate it, but insted into the side of her mouth.
I will only squirt if her mouth has been open longer than a second. She will often gape at me angriliy you see. If I try and squirt it in at any opertunity I will often end up squirting it into her head because she's yerked away.

The first time I gave Miso her Baytril she was ballooned up in an angry rage for about an hour. It stresses her out and she's just not a fan.
She still puts up a huge bloody fight but she doesnt sulk afterwards anymore.

on monday i actually managed to get .01ml of fruit juice in him with an awful lot of fight and an awful lot of scratches on me! lol. i injected his baytril into a wax worm which he ate i thought fantastic i can administer his meds this way...wrong! he then would not touch a wax worm after that at all. that night i called the emergency vet as he had a jet black beard for 3 hours and dark stress marks and was flat on his belly and wouldnt hold his head up, was really really concerned he was having a reaction of some sort, got him back to the vets the following day (tuesday) and the vet did a very thorough check on him, said it was more likely that he was just super annoyed as hes a dragon that you cant really handle during the day until lights are out and hes in his blankie, only then will he settle so a lot of messing about with him then. but he was a little concerned witht he way mischief reacted so gave him an injection of fortum antibiotics instead, its a long lasting antibiotic, 2 of my snakes have had it before with no effects whatsoever and they got well real quick too so was glad mischief had that one too now, hes due back friday morning for his second injection and if thats not his last then should be just one more after that. so hes doing a lot better already today, even got up and did some basking! lol

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
