Hi i have been treating my bearded dragon with baytril 2.5% from the vet and the dosage was 0.2ml per day for 10 days thing is when i went and got his second lot for last 5 days ive noticed it is 10% baytril this time instead of 2.5%!

My vet is away for 2 weeks and i cant contact her for dosage amounts so would i be right im saying if 2.5% baytril is a dosage of 0.2

Then

10% baytril would be 0.05ml

Would this be right as the 10% is 4 times stronger therefor i quarter the amount?

Also before vet went she mentioned doubling the dosage for resistant RI infections i think this maybe why she gave me 10% by accident but does it seem right to you that dose would be doubled for RI that keeps returning?

Ive showed my vet setup lighting basking temps the lot and they are all fine also it was a damptile that caused the infection and tiles have now been removed!

Thanks Help appreciated

I'm sorry, I can't help with this but I know who can. Your best bet is to PM Tracie (username Drache613) and ask her. She's a moderator here and pretty much a dragon expert. She definitely knows allll about proper dosing for meds. I'll try to direct her to your thread too, good luck!

Hello,

How much does your dragon weigh? Did she have any trouble with the previous dose? How long has she had trouble with a respiratory infection?
I can double check the dose for you with the 10% solution.
Are you giving probiotics also during the Baytril rounds?

Hi yes baytril never cured it before i think partly because at the time we were unsure of the cause of the infection and also we never raised the temps so it just came back but at the time my dragon was really poorly this time though my dragon is still very alert and active so vet said she would rather try this again rather than put my dragon through the stress of being put to sleep to get a swab from lungs if dragon was more poorly she wouldve went a head with it!

Also we struggled last time to give the full course but im alot better now with using the med and forcing to take it so hopefully this will kill the infection!

My dragons weight is dead on 500grams and yes i have reptiboost to give at night before bed and antibiotic in morning

Shes had trouble with the infection for about 3 months but is 90% improvement compared to day one vet explained that sometimes these things do comeback and it can be a lengthy process she also explained that the bacteria could become resistant to baytril but that the risk of complications are higher with other drugs and that this is baytril last chance

Thanks for your help much apreciated :)

Hello,

Thanks for getting me the weight.
Actually, your dragon has been getting a dose of 20mg/kg with the 0.2ml. Do you want to continue at that dose, or do you want to go to the lower dose of 5mg/kg? How is she handling the meds? If you want to go to the level of 10mg/kg you can medicate her at 0.1ml for her weight.
The reptoboost is a good product so definitely continue to give that to her her to help out. Are you giving plenty of water daily to help keep her hydrated.
Did they not confirm a respiratory infection? You could always try nebulizing treatments to help.

Let us know how she is doing.

Hi

The 0.2ml was from the baytil 2.5% am i right in saying that would be equal to 5mg/kg?

And for 10%

see if i have this right 0.1 of the 10% solution would be 10mg there for 0.05 would be 5mg

Yes they confirmed respiratory infection by doing xray and could see lungs were infected also did bloods but the came back fine

Yes i actualy have a nebuliser and been using f10 the vet gave me i was going to try some baytril in the neb but im unsure if the baytril i have is oral only or injectable/oral or does it matter whats used in the neb?

Coping well with meds hasnt eaten much but is very alert and active hope this is the last stretch i do give a 1ml veg slurry in morning before meds and then at night maybe about 6pm i give reptiboost mixed with some critical care and calcium i dont want to do much more than that as the poor thing starts stressing if i continuously annoy him but i do bath every 2 days but only whilst on meds otherwise once a week i really do worry about hin becoming resistant to baytril :/

Thanks much for your help :)

UPDATE!!!!!

I have just this minute given beardie his reptiboost and critical care in a syringe and he lapped it up!!

And a drip of what actualy looks like water not mucus came out of that same nostril i spoke of earlier it was not a thick substance at all exactly like water?

What could this be? Could it still be a shedding issue in nostril?

His breathing isnt heavy so i assume that there cant be fluid in his lungs coming up through his nostril as he would be finding it really difficult to breath suppose i wont know until shedding has finished

Hello,

The dose previously of .2mls with 2.5% was 10mg/kg, not 20. I figured on the wrong weight or something.
Anyway, if you want to continue the 10mg/kg dose, you can dose with the 10% as follows:
Your dragon weighs .5kg so give .05ml. The .05ml is still 10mg/kg though, since the concentration of it is 100mg/ml.
How long is he supposed to be on the Baytril? If it is persisting, I would try the nebulizer treatment instead to help expedite the effects.
The oral Baytril can be used in the nebulizer, too. If you need help with using it in the nebulizer, let me know.

I hope this helps.

Hi thanks for the info great help!

Good to know that 0.5 is infact the correct dose to continue his treatment i am interested however about doing it in the nebuliser as it would hit the infection harder his condition seems quite persistant Ive 5 days of a 10 day course left including tomorrow vet did say however that depending on how he is On day 10 if hes improved greatly she would like another 2 days just so that we know we have killed it once and for all :)

At the moment im nebulising f10, i do have some saline to mix with meds for nebulising but never used though if you could let me know how its done that would be brilliant ;)

Would i just use the same amount of baytril?
Do i mix it?
And do i do this aswell as giving orally?
Just once a day?

What confuses me though about nebulising is that you obviously lose alot of it because when it fills the chamber with gas he dosent breath the whole lot in i take it that doesnt matter because what he does get hits directly onto the bacteria?

Thanks so much

Hello!

Let me know if you have more questions on the amount, but the amount when nebulizing is different than when giving directly into the mouth.
I hope the nebulizing treatments are going well!

Hi ive just started doing the nebulising treatment as you told me in your PM,
10mg in 10ml of sterile water?

No noises when breathing and also hes stopped breathing out the side of his mouth which is good but a little clear fluid appears at one nostril still but the the strange thing is last time i seen vet she wasnt concerned by this as it was only one nostril and she really wasnt bothered by this because she said as its clear and not brown or yellow it will be clear secration that they create when shedding inner nostril does this sound right to you?

Just so happens since vet visit his whole head turned grey and isnt far from shedding so i hope shes right but i have never heard this before she went on explaining why it happens! Hope thats the case !

Hello,

Yes, that is correct. It is 10mg of Baytril to 10mls of water.
That is great he seems to be breathing more smoothly right now.
His entire head is gray? Are you sure he is not going to shed?
Sometimes, they can have some clear moisture or fluid from the nostril when shedding but, I would still watch him closely. If it is clear & not thick or yellow that is a good sign.

Let us know how he is doing.

Yes his head is shedding, hes not a cheeky teenager anymore lol!

Yeah that what my vet said about clear fluid and shedding then couple of days later he was actually changing colour to shed all around his face! She also said with it being one nostril she very much doubted it had anything to do with RI as it would infect all his tubes and both nostrils.

Im glad you say clear fluid and not thick yellow is a good sign puts my mind a ease a little to know that theres a chance that the fluid isnt part of his RI but i will keep a close eye on it, keep waiting on crusts to appear also which hasnt happened suppose thats good also!

Thanks
