My beardies been basking lately with one of his eyes closed. Its not either eye in particular and there's no mucus or crust etc. Maybe I'm just over reacting but its got me worried. My temps are all good I think from what I've seen on Internet (79-80 @the cool end and 88-90 @ the warm end). I have a big piece of dw for his baskin spot and the temps diffrentiate at diff spots the lowest temp being around 100 and the highest at 115.I have a zilla desert series 50 fluorescent tube and a 90 watt halogen flood light for the basking bulb any advice will help

What is the distance of the UVB light to your beardie when in the basking spot? Also, what type of thermometer are you using to check the temps?

Sitting around with one eye open and one eye closed is normal -- they do that sometimes and no big deal.

I'm not familiar with the type of lighting you are using though, so I'll have to defer to the other experts on this website to tell you whether it's good or bad. I have always used the Reptisun 10.0 linear tube for UV so that's the only one I can recommend. Anything that produces white light and heat is good for warmth as long as it gets you the right temperatures -- your numbers sound pretty good, assuming that you've got a good accurate thermometer.

he can get as close as 5" or so and as far as 7 or 8" I have a digital probe thermometer. I would send a pic but forget how to upload them lol.Got it

Good that you're using a digital probe thermometer. Make sure you wait at least 45 min before getting the final readings.

A distance of only 5" is a little too close. Hard to say for sure but can you somehow make it 7 to 8" away? Keep observing the eye behavior and make sure it doesn't become more frequent by keeping one or both eyes closed most of the time when in the basking spot. What you're seeing now may be completely normal but a good idea to observe to make sure it doesn't increase.

I actually prefer the Arcadia or Repti-Sun 10.0 bulbs myself.

yes I can move it,but I can only get to about 6" away my tank is a 55gal but not very wide. I guess I'll have to break down and buy a 40gal breeder for its width. Thanks for all your help though.

Doing the one eye closed thing is a very beardie quirk, all my beardies do it, not only when basking (usually both eyes are closed then) , and I often see one or other of their eyes closed when I'm giving them their snuggles.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
