Basking Spot globes driving me crazy (keep dying)

OK, so, we have two beardies, one in an ExoTerra tank, one in a melamine enclosure.
The ExoTerra has an ExoTerra dome on top of it with a 75w* basking spot in it, and the melamine enclosure has a built-in ceramic globe holder on the ceiling, also with a 75w globe.
BUT - I keep blowing globes!!!
It's honestly making me crazy(er). :banghead: Additionally, it's costing a fortune!

Now, I'm careful to only handle the globes with fabric between my hand and the globe (I was told that was important because any grease from your hand could crack the globe when it heats up (is that true?) The lights are on timers, so they're on from 8am to 8pm.

But they keep blowing. :angry5:

I've tried all different hoods, both ET and not ET (some generic, some other brands) and I simply can't work out why the F*** the globes keep dying.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to alternatives or what might be going wrong???

*Globes are: ExoTerra Intense basking spot - 75w

Unfortunately this is a common problem with 'reptile specific' bulbs. All you need is a standard Halogen bulb, nothing fancy. I would also grab a dimmer, I got mine for about $12 at home depot. Good luck!

Thanks to both of you!!! I'm off to the hardware tomorrow!!

One quick (hopefully) question, though - I assume halogen globes don't put out heat so I still need a ceramic heat globe? Yes?

Halogens are hotter per watt than incandescents ..... so if you are using a 80W incandescent ,you may only need a 50W halogen to get the same heat output.

Trial and error is in order to get the wattage & spacing right.

Trust me - halogen globes put out a TON of heat, which is why i highly suggest you buy a dimmer while you are there - less than $15 and will really help make things easier. The kind I am talking about (table dimmers) look like this:

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
