So the cage is proper temp. 106ish on the basking side, 85 on the cool. But im wondering if the basking rock is getting too hot. Dante seems to enjoy it. He sits up on it for 20-30 min at a time opening his mouth to cool down now and then, but what im worried about is his feet. He holds them up on it like its burning them. I took a picture to show. Is this normal?

Hi there,

What are you measuring the temp with?

A dial stick on, a digital with probe, or a temp gun?

The digital has a long wire with a probe end correct?

Did you place the probe directly where your dragon is in the picture, and did you leave it resting in that spot for 45 minutes to an hour?

If its only 106 after an hour than it shouldn't be hot enough to be hurting the little guys feet.

As long as he is active, healthy, eating, and pooing regularly every day I don't think there is anything wrong with the temp. It might just be the way he sits.

If you feel the temp is good for him basking, then just put a facecloth on top of the basking spot. That's what I've done for my babies & it always worked well, they feel heat from on top, so sometimes the basking temp is great, but they get sensitive on the bottom. Try that & see how that works.

My little guy does that with his feet sometimes, even on the cool side. And we use reptile carpet and he has a wood climb to his basking spot. Still does it with his toes flexed up. I love the towel idea for the rock though. We do it for the bath and for when he goes outside in his plastic tub, but never thought to use it on the basking spot! Great idea!

Thanks, I started doing that with Sweetie as she liked it hot on her back but not on her tummy & now I'm doing the same for my new little rescue Gabriel, he's the same, likes it hot on the top of his back but not on his tummy. Works well, so will continue doing that as he stays much longer under his light with the towel underneath him. My other four males don't seem to care one way or the other, so I don't do it with them.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
