Aside from my pumpkin Alex, I also keep and breed live bearers. But this past weekend I stumbled into an Angelfish breeding operation, for free.

Spent today testing and cleaning all the accessories, cleaned the tanks yesterday.

Included a pic of one of my son's hybrids. He chose the parents, I did everything else lol

Oh that's cool. I love fish but was never good at keeping them.

I had kept them on and off for years. When covid hit I setup a small aquarium to teach the kiddo life cycles and such while doing at home school. That kind of spiraled when a strange guppy was born in the tank. That led to a lot of research to learning what it was, a wild cousin of guppies. We started studying chemistry when we learned they can live in saltwater and a long rabbit hole to us keeping a few strains that are extinct in the wild. One was discovered in 2011 and by the return trip in 2013 the area was a parking lot / housing complex. But like guppies, they breed quickly and can interbreed to make unique strains like that pink and yellow one with purple tiger stripes (to be brought out better in future generations)

Wow thats cool.
It's a shame when we destroy the natural habitats of animals, especially when it's an isolated population that doesn't exist anywhere else. I understand the need for housing and business ext. But it seems to me we could do it in a way that doesn't destroy crucial habitats.
It's a good thing hobbyists keep animals like that, at least they aren't extinct and could be repopulated.

There are still other types in the wild. But this particular color and patterns were only found along a stretch of drainage basin. These ones were discovered under a bridge crossing the drainage (which is now a surface street) and given the name Campoma NR 47 for the region discovered, national road 47 for the crossing lol but commercially they're French blues PXL_20231015_230815015.MP.jpg

I wanted them for awhile, but the only ones available were in Europe. Then I inherited a catfish tank and was surprised with two males. Took a bit to get the females from another strain to breed only French blues, but it obviously worked.

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
