So I'm yet again the rescue mommy to a new hatchling... I know I really shouldn't have gone with another one but frankly I had no reasonable choice in the matter It was either take him or he was getting turned loose outside!
I have no history on this hatchling (except that all he was kept in was a 10 gallon aquarium with a coil UVB light and no heat lamp), but I can tell he's not in good shape. He doesn't seem too underweight, he actually looks rather normal in weight just that his legs are a teensy bit boney. He sleeps a lot, even now that he's under the proper lighting (brought him home last night). Although currently he's a bit more "awake", he opens his eyes more when I pick him up and has moved a little since I laid him on the basking rock. When I'm holding him, he will occasionally try to move or get away and he ends up walking very wobbly. His head tips to the side and he looks like he's trying to roll over almost. I don't believe it's MBD, unless possibly the structure of his neck and collarbone is getting flimsy? Otherwise his bones/legs look normal and don't appear or feel soft. While he moves rather clumsily and a bit slowly, he still has good enough reflexes to flip himself over when he's turned on his back (I only did it once to make sure he was reacting correctly), but other than that he seems out of it.
He will not eat on his own and definitely won't chase down food (be it crickets or roaches, I even tried a small waxworm). When I hold him he will frequently "gasp", opening his mouth and narrowing his eyes, like he's in pain. The majority of the time when he does this I'm just holding him on my palm, not doing anything else except perhaps moving around.
Just recently I was trying to assist feed him to see how he would take to it (I wanted to make sure if he would react badly to it because I have a suspicion I will have to be doing that for him in the near future, depending on how he accustoms himself to the new lighting. I just have a bad feeling that he will continue to refuse to eat) and I had quite the scare with him! I had been gently prodding the side of his lips with a cricket to coerce him to open his mouth, and after a few attempts he seemed to have what I've pegged as a non reactive/non violent seizure or stroke?? He would gasp on and off in short intervals, his breathing became very heavy (you could tell because, well it's hard to explain... you know when you see a dragon breath, the ribs will cave in during an exhale and then expand again when they inhale? Well, this was an extreme form of that), and he almost seemed to stop breathing or reacting for a few seconds. He was mostly limp and I could have done whatever with him and he wouldn't have reacted. Then it seemed to finally calm down and he started breathing again; his eyes were still closed but I gently but firmly stroked his back to wake him up (I was scared he may not wake up!) and eventually he did open his eyes a little. Now he's back in his viv and acting normal.
Right now I'm thinking he had a stroke (though I'm no vet/doctor by any means and not really sure what stroke symptoms would be in a dragon) and probably had one or more previously, which has caused a bit of damage to his brain or muscles and causes him to walk all funny. It's not that he can't walk straight, it's just that when he starts to walk is wobbly, clumsy, and generally he tilts to one side. I'd almost describe it as Enigma Syndrome like in enigma leopard geckos.
I do realize he needs to see a vet and am trying to figure out how to do this because the vet I usually see is closing down soon, and I'm unsure of another nearby herp vet I think I know of one but will have to find it again, as I don't remember the name of it. But until I can get a vet checkup, what do you all think of this predicament?
Edit: I also forgot to mention he has a pretty fresh toe and tail nip that I'm going to treat, but they may or may not be infected. I really am not sure how to tell if it is, but the toe is black-ish colored and the tail nip looks like it's healing pretty well, with a little black coloration where the nip is.
