This is my first post on this forum, which has been incredibly helpful!
My bearded dragon Pyxis is my very first reptile, and while I have done a fair bit of research, there are still some things I'm not sure of, and I get easily spooked when something seems off. I purchased him from a breeder about three weeks ago.
Overall, his behavior seems normal. He does a lot of basking, some exploring, occasional napping. He tolerates snuggles and baths. He goes some days where he eats a lot (recent max was 33 dubia roaches and 12 BSFL in one day) and some days where he doesn't seem to want to eat much at all, but he always eats at least a couple bugs and never goes more than a day or so without having a decent sized meal of at least 10 bugs. He has also been gaining weight each week.
Where I'm concerned is that he has a little bit of black on his beard all the time. It's a small band of dark coloring that gives him a chin strap from ear to ear. I've never seen his beard go fully black and it doesn't seem to occur with any other type of aggressive behavior. Occasionally he will flex his beard with a couple quick, small puffs, but that's it. It's just like there's a slight shadow of black on part of his beard at all times. He has displayed stress marks on his belly only two times (once seemingly in response to a loud noise and once while basking--both times the marks went away after being handled), so the black coloring doesn't seem to be in conjunction with other dark coloring.
I poked around trying to figure out if this was normal or not, but I couldn't find much of this behavior by itself. Pictures are below so you can get a sense of the touch of black on his beard.
Is this normal behavior? Does it mean he is irritated or stressed? Since it doesn't seem to go away, does this mean he is perpetually stressed? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Age: About 10 weeks
Measurements: 33 grams, 9.5 inches
Diet: He averages about 10 BSFL and 17 dubia roaches each day. He'll take a nibble of mustard greens, kale, papya, acorn squash or mango occasionally, but overall isn't interested in veggies/fruits.
Supplements: Ca + D3 5-6 times a week, Multivitamin 4 times a week
Enclosure: 40 gallon tank (36"x18"x18')
Substrate: Tile
Setup: Includes stacked flat rocks for basking, a small hide he sometimes curls up in, dishes for bugs/veggies, stuffed alligator, artificial succulents
Lights: I have a 22" Reptisun 10.0 HO T5 UVB lamp and a MegaRay 100w UVB.
Temps: Basking spot is 100-110. Warm side is 95. Cool side is 75-85.
BMs: Poops 1-3 times a day. Was loose one time, but other than that it has seemed very normal.
Baths: Twice a week
