I was at work one day when a guy came in asking about beardies and if anyone knew how to care for one. He said his friend's wife had thrown the beardie into the bushes and it was there for one week until they found him. The guy asked me if I wanted him and of course I said yes. What's one more! When he brought it in it was only a hatchling. My guess is less than 8 weeks old. He is in serious poor condition. His back has a huge hump and is curved. His front legs are bowed and his back legs seem weak. He has trouble getting around sometimes but he can be quick! The base of his tail has a huge lump on it and something took a bite out of his tail midway down. It was ok for awhile then it shriveled up and fell off. His bottom jaw protrudes slightly and he seems to have very labored breathing when eating. He has a great appetite and eats pinhead crickets and mixed greens. I taught him to drink from his water dish! I dust his food and use Fluker's vitamin spray on his greens. Sometimes when he eats too quickly though he spits up his food in a very clear and sticky bolus. I have his tank set up like my other 2 beardies( I've had beardies for years so I'm sure his set up is good) I've had Benny for about 3 weeks and when I first got him he was so emaciated he couldn't lift his head. I nursed him with the baby food mix and he took to the crickets immediately chasing them down. I'm just so concerned. Is it MBD or was he deformed from birth? Is there anything else I can do to give him a better life?

Thanks for any advice.

What a sad story, but what a trooper you are for taking him in ! The answer about his condition is that it could be both....but it sounds mostly like severe MBD, the jaw misshapen would not be a birth defect like a crooked spine could be. But the crooked spine+ deformed legs all sound like a horrific case of MBD. The fact that you have him eating with gusto is really inspiring, keep up the good work.

Go there and order their calcium glubionate..

It helps alot.. it gives instructions and everything I use it on a crested gecko at work who got returned with MBD her spine looks alot better than it did, when she first got returned.

That is the saddest story I've heard. That poor baby beardie!! I'm so glad that you have him now and will give him the best care he can get. Keep us updated on the little guy.

I'm so happy to say Benny is shedding! I take this as a positive sign since he's growing. Thanks for everyone's advice and concern!

I weighed and measured Benny today. I have looked at all of the growth charts for beardies and poor Benny isn't on them at all! I have no idea how old he is. He weighs 17 grams and he lost 3" of his tail due to something biting it half off when he was tossed out in the rose bushes by those horrible people. With his stub tail he is 4.5" long. https://picasaweb.google.com/froggette/HereSBenny?locked=true#
I hope I got that right so you can see pics. If not it's still the correct webpage.
Thanks!

I recently adopted a beardie and I've always been curious about how and why he has what I call "an underbite" does that mean he has MBD? When I adopted him from the petstore they told me that they found him outside there store in the middle of winter half dead, they nursed him a little bit back to health but now I'm taking him in and caring for him. You can see his hip bones and he also has, like I said, an underbite. I've been giving him a lot more calcuim not so much that he has yellow urine ( I forgot what it's called). If he does have MBD am I doing everything right? THANKS! :D

Just wanted to let you all know Benny passed away last Saturday. He went very peacefully and quickly. I know he's no longer suffering or deformed. He's a perfect little dragon now chasing crickets by the rainbow bridge! Love you little buddy.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
